I have an 86 528e with a leaky water pump. The book says to strike the nut quickly on the fan to loosen it, which seems impossible(ive tried several times) so any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks :banghead s..

normally with a solid rod of steel placed on the nut , stricking the rod with sharp blow ( HAMMER) will snap the locking position and allow the left hand thread to be free.. other wize try a cold chisel on left hand side of nut striking around the nut should come off nice and easy just spin the fan... left ways
yeah thats i was try to say , wrench, get the wrench onto it. theres a special spanner available from automotive tool stockist that is slightly thinner than normal spanners makes things a Little more comfortable to loosen.
left hand threads on those fans i am most certain of that
You don't actually need the spammer tool (most of the time) I'm a girl and I get the fans off EVERY time with a smack with the hammer....food for thought
Should come off easily as desribed above. You may want to ask a friend to help. (S)he can lock the waterpump pulley with a rather long screwdriver and then getting the blover finns off should be piece of cake using "spammer" and hammer.
In e28 sooo easy, as the hood opens from the latter edge.
