^no, it doesn't "stop sucking refrigerant when full" (or else why would there be symptoms that indicate an overcharged system....)
the only way to 100% 'fill' a system properly is to evacuate and refill with the proper amount of volume (listed on the ac tag uder the hood).
while there, you aught to replace the dessicant (accumulator) and reseal (since the refrigerant had to go somewhere, it doesn't wear out).
most diy guys will suggest squeezing in a can and 'go from there', but not many of them can read the guages. that's sorta like self medicating. if it works, great, but if not, then you will need to seek the advice from an experienced professional.
