ok i put the engine in last night. it turns over but wont start finely figured out no fuel. so i jumped the relay (relay was bad) plus loose wire so now theres fuel. so know i have no spark. i checked the rotor and dist. cap there ok i tested the spark plug wires there ok. i put the plug in the wire and grounded it theres no spark(new plug)i also grounded out the wire straight from the coil. the coils not producing any spark. i ohmed the coil its good. so if the plugs, rotor, dist cap.,& coil are good why no spark? from the battery to what; goes to the coil? i have no clue wtf is going on. the coil and wiring hasnt been touched since the engine was removed and installed. it has to be on the engine is all i can think of if dist, rotor and plugs and wires are good. what would it be. thanks! i just want to hear the engine breathe.

With no year or model information, I will provide what I can.

If you had to bypass the fuel pump relay to get fuel the issues is most likely the signal from the reference sensor is missing.

If it, the reference signal, is missing the ecu will never send a signal to the coil to create the spark.

Here is a Motronic 1.1 diagram for reference.

which sensor are you referring to? where is it located im positive all are connected the only think that may be backwards is the 2 connections under the 20 pin connector. but i switched them back and forth it didnt make a diff. also a bmw service tech (used to be) lives down the street we couldnt figure it out. 1987 325is

Let review for the LURKERS.

The most important signal is the reference position signal.

It signals the ECU to create the spark and to pump the fuel.

My WAG was "most likely the signal from the reference sensor is missing"

Electronic ignitions can be very troublesome, since there is no visual, just a input and waiting for the output.

Now a points and condenser distributor that is a real deal tool.

Just BSing, but it is amazing sometimes when you can hear it start up.
