I've had my 540i for 4 years now and have always garaged it during the winter and driven a beater until spring. With a second baby on the way, for safety reasons I think I'm going to drive it all year round. I bought the wheels and tires (Alpins) but still have trepidation about ruining its good looks and remembering back to my mom's station wagon with rear wheel drive in the winter. When I was in Bavaria I saw tons of 5 series in the snow and figured they have to be an ideal winter car. Should I keep the beater? Thoughts, suggestions?

My owners manual mentioned snow chains. I assume they are hard plastic strips so they won't damage the tires and wheels. Anybody seen or priced those things.

I also considered buying a new wheel and making my spare a snow tire, thereby having two snow tires in the winter.

here in AU once you hit snow up in the Snowy Mountains you pretty much have to put chains on or the police will own you, just a safety thing, if there is no snow on the road then do not put them on :)

can you elaborate on the snow conditions? I am hoping to pick up a nice used 528it or 540it now, because I fear future ones will suffer the same Bangle :pissed2 treatment as the other models. And I am concerned with the winter performance. I realize it's not awd, but i have heard they're pretty good in the snow and crud. Are they good as in, you can carry a decent speed :driving thru slush, 4-6 inches of snow, etc.? Or does the car barely make it? Is audi the better route? :wrench thanks

i went and bought a 528iT anyway. it's works well in the snow. and my tread is down. i can't imagine really needing winter tires if my bald all-seasons work this well.

My 97 540i has the stock wheels and tires. with the traction control on it handles better than any other 2wheel drive car I have owned or diven. My .02

I live in the lake Erie snow belt. We average 90 inches a winter. My SUV is a 4 wheel drive but does just ducky in 2 wheel most of the time. My Accord is a front wheel drive. My 540 has Goodyear M+S with 50% tread. ( got it that way ) The BMW is by far my last choice in slippery conditions. Not two bad going forward but it wont back up. I can't get it out of the driveway. Stops and corners ok. I'm sure better tires would improve traction alot but the car is not moving untill spring when all the salt is off the road. Why screw up a preformance vehicle in the winter when all the non drivers are creeping along and your stuck behind. Then a salt truck comes along and blasts you with chunks of salt the size of marbles.

hey guys... i was supposed to take the road test for my licence today... went there and they canceled it because there was some snow (read: a lot of snow) on the road. ok. so i decided to just go do the parallel parking once. got it in there perfectly, but when I was about to pull out, the car wont move. i stab the gas pedal whooooooooooosh wheel spin, no movement. my dad had to go push it from the back while I tried moving it back and forth trying to slide it out without hitting anything. what a day, and its only 8:30
