330 either way, a perfect driver in a 5speed 325 would make it pretty close but still not fast enough
No, no, no.............it depends on the driver. i have seen drivers who have very little driving experience and have big, powerful cars and they still can't match an experience driver with a less powerful car. between the 325 and the 330, there isn't ALL that much of a difference in power.

lol AZ yes there is....41hp? and i dont know the torque figure.......but 41hp is alot and either way the 330 would win, i dont think BMW would make a less expensive car, outperform there more expensive ones

I don't understand what is better about manual over automatic. I'm sure on of you can explain it to me. Because the only explanation I've ever received is that in manual you can shift at higher rpm's. But my car shifts at redline and its an automatic.

Also I have an automatic 328is. There is a way you can switch it to manual. Do you think it would be better to drive it in manual or drive it in 3 in auto (sport mode) I usually drive in 3 because I dont see a difference.

there is a possibility of you being able to shift faster in manual, and also being able to "launch" you car, in all realality, BMW's steptronic tranny shifts incredibly fast, only to be quickened by dinans tranny software...if not for dropping the clutch on a manual, steptronic would just as quick

you have a e36 right? if so, switch the switch to M and pull the shifter back into first when ya wanan shift to second, push it into 2, then 3 then 4

So I should use manual mode to go faster in my car? And if I do use the manual mode do I have to downshift?
obviously you don't know how to drive stick. stick shift cars are a lot faster in acceleartion. the 325i does 0 to 60 in 7.1 seconds in manual, and 8.1 in automatic.

False false false false false.
No one, no matter what short shifter will be able to outshift a modern automatic tranny. Its just impossible.

Now in my mind there is absolutly no question about it that the 325 will win. This is because im assuming by track you meant autocross track and not a stupid 1320 track. If its the quarter mile then an automatic would win no question, auto is better for the 1320, better starts and more power on the start (most auto trannys now come with fuzzy logic which computes when the most torque has been reached before shifting). However saying this is a real track, the manual would win because automatic transmissions cannot downshift worth shit. It takes forever for it to realize it needs to compensate for more power and downshift. So coming and going out of each turn, when you downshift in the manual you will shoot past the automatic which will take half way through a turn to downshift. However going out onto the straight the 330 will pull past again.

but who can get a great launch and nail the 1-2 shift QUICKLY while under pressure? shame on you guys who voted the 325...
ok your talking about psyedo tracks... the ones that arnt really tracks just strips of road. you want to win on those go buy an LS1 and boost the shit out of it. This is bmwforums, not american trash car 1/4 mile forums (and no im not being rude here)

you can shift faster in a manual, just do it quickly. mario andretti can shift in .08 seconds i believe.
Mario andretti has a 3.4 million dollar car. Your car costs only a measly 5 digits. Automatics shift faster, no clutch pedal, no shifter throws, no human error. Go out and try seeing how fast you can shift ... i bet the fastest you can sucsessfully shift in a all out pull is like .6 seconds. absoute fastest. Still doesnt beat a auto tranny.

i'm not saying ur wrong fox but how is it that most manuals can chirp the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts when autos cant? even tho they(autos) shift faster?

with a normal launch, i think a manual 330 would be dead even with a auto 330...since the manual 330 has shorter gearing (better acceleration)

Just about any normal human can shift faster then an automatic, believe that. There is even some people that can shift faster then BMW's SMG which is much much faster then an auto.

If you can't shift faster then an auto then shouldn't be driving a manual, better yet you shouldn't be driving at all.

Lets also mention that automatics have torque converters, which takes power away from the wheels, thus resulting in a manual having more HP at the wheels.
