Hi guys, I have an E39 '96 and currently have 4x 235 40 18's MV1 on my car,
however due to the recent cold weather we've had in the UK there has been an outbreak of potholes in my county which has resulted in me getting a crack the lip of the wheel (

I was thinking can I replace the rear two wheels for 255 35 18's? I know they're wider and was wondering if there is enough room between the tyre and the car for this or if I should just stick to 235 40 18's?

Alas trying to find a replacement 235 40 18's are rare as rocking horse poo, but 255 35 18's are ten a plenty. Or how much should I be looking at to get it welded fixed? Thanks for your time in reading this and I appreciate any help you can give me.

i was asking a very simular question, only for the 1999 e39. I had 235/45/17's on all fours. However I did see a number of e39's assorted ( 540's 528's ) with 255 / 35/18 or 255/40/ 18's. The first 255/35.28 seem to be exteremly rare. Im putting 255/40/17's on my 1999 e39 style 5 wheels in the rear. It seems to have enough clearance and my owner's manual even recommends 255 's. Any bigger than that and there might need to be some surgery . Also brettski answered my question and told me to check tiresnrims.com or something like that t compare tire sizes to the ones i had and wanted. Hopefully this will provide you with at least a quater decent answer. Thanks for asking .

Also, Im sorry but im not too hot on how much it will cost to get welded. However I would just replace them for visual reasons.

Thanks for replying, I've decided to get them fixed. I thought I had some MV1's but it turns out I don't, I have some very similar different style wheels (I have no idea how I missed it!) and the wheels I have are rare as rocking horse poo to get hold of, so for that reason I'm going to get them fixed (I was thinking perhaps getting them black in the process)

No I'll probably get ripped for not picking up such a stupid miss! Oh well...
So it's gonna cost me around £130-£150 per wheel to get sorted. o.u.c.h.

Oh in that case it would be a brilliant idea to get them fixed. I seem to have overlooked the fact that they are very rare. I wish you the best of luck in everything you do with your bmw. Thank care my friend

You can use this site to do all sorts of what if scenarios on tyres and wheels, like how wide can I go rubber wise on the rims that I have, or what affect does a bigger tyre have on my clearances and speedo?

Make a point of adding it to your favorites, it comes in really handy.
The other handy site I use for the rims is Felgen-Katalog - BMW-Treff - der Treffpunkt für alle BMW-Fans und -Fahrer
This gives you your current wheel specs width offset and OEM rubber details. Add that to your favorites as well. Cheers guys. Good luck with the repairs
