dose anyone know what kind of sensor this is, it was hanging under my car (95 318i m42b18) near the front drivers side head light. it has the number 1-383-206 printed on it. thanks in advance

Welcome! I looked up the part # at realoem.com and came up with this...

Part 61311383206 (MICROSWITCH BACKREST LOCKING) was found on the following vehicles: E31 850Ci Coupe

So...I'm not really sure. I double checked on Google and found this diagram to double check...

Are you sure thats a 6 on the end as I zoomed it 200% and couldnt make out what the last two digits are.

I think its a six but i guess it could maybe be a 4, its kinda scratched up

Given the location you mention in an E36, and since I can recognize one of those in my sleep, that is your ambient temperature sensor. It is usually inserted into the left side brake cooling duct behind the bumper. If you want to confirm it, just unplug it and start your car -- you should see the ambient temperature indicator read "-37 F"

Daniel is absolutely correct. That's the ambient temperature sensor. There's a little rubber grommet on the underside of the left brake duct that it plugs into.
