Greetings....here is a story I thought some of you would enjoy. My roommate and I drove from New York to Vermont last weekend. He has a 2001 S4, and I have a 2003 330i. The roads were okay on the way up, but it started snowing when we crossed the state line. I'm screwed, right? Not necessarily. Going around a downhill turn, the S4 lost traction and slid across the road into a guard rail. Nothing too serious, but he needs a good bit of work. My BMW took the turn with no problem. It just goes to show you that you can have all the traction control systems in the world, but cautious drivers will always win out :D

Definitely. Give a bad driver a super car and some bad road conditions (even good ones) and he will crash it...no amount of technology is gonna change that.

AWD is a waiste of money....
I disagree... any one who has ever ridden in an imprezza wrx or sti or a Lancer Evo VII knows that in some cases AWD is far better. Ever been to an auto-x when it's raining? If ya have you'd agree with me on that. But you are corect in saying that AWD won't save a stupid person from them selves.

My dad has a 2003 E320 4Matic and there is no doubt that it feels safer then our Ody or Civic...but still you don't NEED AWD! A RWD vehicle with a good set of snow tires should do good for you. I would also like to retract my previous statement saying that AWD is a waiste of money. AWD is a good choice but it's only good if you've got the extra money and live in Michigan, where it would really help you, notice that I didn't say that you need it rather that it will help you cuz VSC and TRAC + a good set of snow tires has helped us in our Civic in Detroit!
I haven't driven any Subaru's but I've heard that they are real nice. But, AWD does help!

I agree that RWD will get you most of the places that you need to go. However, I used to live in Arkansas and because of all the hills near my house it was hard to get out of my neibhor hood with out spinning tires, even when it was just raining hard. With snow and some ice it is impossible with 2WD wether it's FWD or RWD. My moms Subarau Forester with it's tiny Boxer 4cly went by 2WD Tahoes and Suburbans, Jeeps and BMWs that were over on the side of the road. Granted this happens once a year or so but, I think it is still very vaild in showeing that RWD and FWD are not as good in any adverse conditions when driver skill is equal.

i wish my bimmer had traction control... not that I would need it a lot, but those few times there is bad wheather it is hard (especially when you have to move slowly at first until you have some speed).

how come nobody has mentioned tires? they play the biggest part int trqction when om snow

anywas i belive awd is better in the snow for getting going and getting unstuck and through deep areas

my buddy in his crx got stuck on a backroad by our house and what i had to do was take the audi out there drive past his car and tow his damn car out all in like a good 2 feet

and in the bimmer i can move sometimes im spinning into 4th gear barely touching the gas

Yup. I agree 100%. It's all about the tires. I have had 4wd, Awd, Fwd, and Rwd, and I can tell you that the right tires for the conditions is more important than all other factors for 99% of the situations most people find themselves in. Of course, the driver skill is the other all important factor.

yah both my friend and i are from arizona and are both in school in boulder colorado and his bmw has all season tires on it and i put my old rims back on it with some winter tires, he can't even get moving when it snows and i can drive fine. There is most definitely a difference between tires even on similar cars
