Yokahama AVS Sports for UHP, or I have the ES 100's. I like the way they ride and were less expensive than the Conti sport contact 2's and BFG's that they replaced, are quieter also.

yep i agree...for summer conditions the Yokohama AVS tires are really nice...good rain capabilities too. Just look at that thread!!!

I agree Yokahama AVS Sports are nice tires, but to keep your options open you might also look into some Michelin Pilot Sports. I have a set on my car, and they seem to be a good all around tire as well.

Well I need a real good all around tire. I live in PA and its snows here. Thanks for the reply guys!!!

One more thing....... Can someone explain the size and what it means?

Original Equipment is for a 225/50 R16 and on her now is 205/55 R16??????? WTF?

"all around" tires are only good cuz they end up costing you less...

But you lose out on alot. They dont out perform a good summer tire, and they typically dont cut it in serious winter condition. I dont know how bad it can get in PA...but if you get snow and a good amount of it...it would be much wiser to invest in a REAL winter tire and a REAL summer tire...

but thats just my opinion.

second that.

it can be cheap if you have a 325 car not 330. 325 have small discs and can take odler style steel wheels, so a set of snows mounted on them will be around $600 total.

then you can get whathever summer tyre the guys recommended on the eom alloys.

OH boy does it snow in PA! :lol: I used to live in Latrobe(home of Rolling Rock beer B) ), about an hour away from Pittsburgh.The # in front is the tire width, the higher the number the wider the tire will be. The next # is the tire sidewall width(referred to as tire profile). The last number listed is the wheel diameter, that will fit in the tire. Getting the same overall tire diameter can be achieved, by changing tire width and profile. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the explanation. Yes it snows way to much, i hate snow on my car. I live near Harrisburg. So the higher the number means the bigger profile or the other way around?

Let's say your tires sizes are 225/50 R16, here's what that means:

The first number, 225, is the width of the tire. The larger the number, the wider the tire. Generally speaking, wider tires are "stickier" and tend to provide better grip. Wider tires are better when referring to performance tires. On the other hand, if you're talking about snow tires, narrower is often considered better.

The second number, 50, represents the height of the tire off of the wheel. Again, the larger this number is, the higher the tire is. Generally speaking, higher is not better from a performance standpoint. The smaller this number is, the more "low profile" the tire is considered. These lower profile tires are considered better performing because there's less rubber between the rigid wheel and the hard pavement, thus, it's more responsive.

The last number, 16 represents the diameter of the wheel that the tire is mounted on. Generally, bigger is better here, because a larger diameter means that you're putting a greater patch of rubber on the road, which gives more grip.

Thank you Connie for the great explanation. Thats exactly what I was looking for. My concern was the 2nd number the 50 or 55. I want a low profile tire and 50 is lower than 55. So thats what Im going with the 225/50 r16, now if I can only decide what tires to get. Thanks again...............

Just wanted to add a little clarification on the sidewall height (the second number).
225/45/17 for example. The 45 represents a percentage (or aspect ratio) of the first number (225). 225 means, 225mm wide. The 45 in this example means that the sidewall height is 45% of 225mm. So, the sidewall height in this case is 101.25 mm.

I wanted to point this out because, while the first number (the width of the tire in mm) can be compared among tires, the second number (the one you were concerned with) only makes sense when compared to the first number.

So, a 260/40/17 would have a higher sidewall height (104mm) than the 225/45/17 in our example even though the second number was lower.
To convert mm to inches, just divide. MM divided by 25.4= inches.

One recommendation since you are getting them from the Tire Rack. I am assuming that you are not buying new wheels too. So you will have to get your old tires taken off of your old rims and your new ones put on. You have probably seen that the Tire Rack has a list of local installers. Check their prices, but I would call around too.

In my experience, the installers/garages that Tire Rack recommended where much pricier than other places. To give you some idea, as I recall the recommended places were going to be about 80 dollars for all 4 tires on my old rims, and disposal of the old tires. I shopped around and found non-recommended places that would do it for around 45-50 dollars.

BTW- what type/size tires did you decide on?

Im going with the Conti conti extreme contact...... 225/50 r16

I need an all around tire, i cant right now afford just a set of snow rims and tires. So thats why. I got a quote for 16.50 a tire to mount and balance at a local shop. I know them and they are good people. My only concern on deciding who to do the mount and stuff was messin up my rims. Plus for the money on the tires is a good price......... Local BMW place wanted 120.00 a tire.

for overall daily tires, pirelli p7000 ss are great. they are cheap as well and lasts pretty long. *ultra high performance all season

but hands down, best tire of all is the Michelin Pilot Sport. those tires are awesome.
toyo ts1 (i think that is what its called) are also awesome.

I looked at the pilots but at 180 a tire and the snow and rain rating isnt very good. The others wear is a factor because they are a soft compound. I plan on getting a new BMW after winter so why get real nice tires.

Does anyone have the Falken ZIEX ZE 512? Consumer Reports just rated it best (among those it tested), above some of those mentioned above...

Just wondering.
