Disregard my previous post, I solved the revving problem on my own by replacing the cap and rotor. However, the car still has trouble starting. It has new plugs and I'll buy new wires tonight. I used to be able to turn the key and the car would start immediately, now it requires holding the starter on for longer, and when its stutters on initially, it will stumble off right away. After doing that 5 times or so, it starts as if nothing was ever wrong and the idle adjusts to 900rpm. I know its not a big problem does anyone in this forum know these older cars?

no it's injected. I am suspicious of what people elsewhere in the forum are referring to as the Cold Start Injector. It seems somehow related to that because the car was never overly eager to start in the morning but at least it started every subsequent time in the day. Now it acts like it's 7am all day long regardless of how long I've been driving.

i have no idea what the cold start injector is...
and about the starting issue have you checked you fuel pump for pressure and volume?
if you have to give it some gas for it to start that may be the problem

honestly I have no idea what it is either, from what i've read the cold start injector regulates the fuel going in while the starter is running, which is why I wondered about it. It seems that perhaps it is not getting the right power? As far as the fuel pump goes, that seems less likely since the car won't start if I am applying gas. Would the fuel pump function at all even while driving if its an electrical problem? Once the car is started I can drive normally.

Fixed it!

It turned out to be the fuel filter, which had a nearly invisible pinhole in it from something, which I am guessing was a pebble hitting it. I promptly replaced the filter and not only is the car starting again, but I discovered that my car has about 30% more power. Thanks to 'theluis' for the suggestion of investigating that more closely.
