So last weekend I put in new washers for the shifter rod and the new bushing that attaches to the transmission in my 2003 330Ci (100,000 miles). They tightened things up pretty good, but it's still not as tight as I'd like it to be.

While I had the linkage off, I could see how sloppy the shifter "ball" was in its socket. So I figure that is next. 2 questions for guys who have done this.....

First, if I just buy a new plastic "socket" that the ball rotates in, can that be installed from the top? Or does the long "socket carrier" have to come off the transmission/floor pan?

Second, E-bay is filled with short shifters that have a lower aluminium housing on the shifter itself and do not come with a new "carrier". Is the idea to remove the worn out plastic socket from the carrier and fit this aluminium piece in its place with o-rings and snap rings? Has anybody here tried this approach? And again can it be done without removing the carrier?

Advice is appreciated.

I ended up just installing the "socket" from the top of the car (though the linkage had to be removed below) and installing with the original shifter.

Tightened things up even more, to the point of requiring a bit of a push to get into some gears (especially 4th). I'm going to stay with this set up for now.
