How do you take the airbag off of the steering wheel? Is there any DIY sites that you guys could point me to? Thanks in advance.

im pretty sure that airbags cant be unloaded but only discharged unless your car has the saftey feature that turns off the airbag.

Yeah, I'm tired of it just sitting there, and me not doing anything on it. I was sitting in it, and that airbag was bothering me, so i wanted to take it off, just for the hell of it. Fox, yes it is discharged. I really want to get the hood open, but the latch is hidden somewhere. I might just get a Bentley Manual and study that till the end of the summer, when i can fix it.

Hello there.

Well i was talking with a mate of mine about BMW's and i "accidently" asked about him about removal of airbags. He got the following information for me.

NOTE : His BMW is a E39 and the wheel is M-Sport Steering Wheel...

1.: Put the steering wheel in center position(wheelsstraight position).

2.: Be sure the battery is disconnected. Use a 13mm socket to remove the negative lead from the battery.

3.: Loosen the (2) T-30 Torx bolts until the airbag is free.

4.: While supporting the airbag, unplug the horn line, button pod connector , and airbag connector to free the airbag completely.
Be sure to pull the airbag connector straight out to avoid breakage. Always handle the airbag very carefully and store it with the face (BMW emblem) pointing upwards and NOTHING lying on top of it.'
In the event of an misfire, you don't want it flying to the ceiling or launching a some sort of tool or something at you (He was very very determined that i understood that part).
March/1999 And onwards airbags have a wires leading from the airbag and button pods to connectors in the hub-area. Simply unplug these connectors and remove the airbag. Removing an M-Sport airbag is slightly different since the button pods are integrated into the steering wheel and not the airbag.

------

And then, you should have removed your airbag...

I hope this helps you a bit.

Yeah, it does. Except I disregarded the last bit, cause I dont have to worry about it discharging (already did!) So all I need is the T-30 torx and unplug the connections? I am getting the 3-spoke ///M steering wheel, ($700!) cause I am in love with it! Any one know of where I can one cheaper than E-bay.
