hi just acquired myself a 1988 735i the other day from old friend of the family who was clearing out his garage.
everything about it was in alright condition and drove well over the last week i've had it. until yesterday when it started to over heat and developed a rattle then eventually stopped on me. after having it sit for around half an hour it was able to start but stopped again soon after and only developed the rattle when it was getting hot. I've had European cars all my life also but this is my first BMW. Any help on what the rattle is and how it can be corrected would be greatly appreciated.

Your probably over heating the oil and creating detonition. You should get your cooling system flushed asap. avoid driving it or you could ruin your motor and create a much bigger problem. First check for coolant leaks and also check head gaskets. If you are mechanically inclined, take it to your mechanic.
