Hi guys, I heard a lot of people say to change the plastic impeller on the water pump to a metal one. I have a 94 325is auto and wondering what are the procedures to change it? Where can I get the parts? How much will it cost to take it to the shop and change it there?
thanks!

its not near as hard as back flushing the engine to get all the busted plastic out. when mine went it cracked the radiator reservoir and cracked the thermostat housing. It would have been 100 times easier and much cheaper before the waterpump impeller ate it.
you can get the water pump at the dealership or napa.
i have the same car mine went at 68k at 430 am in the ghetto.

I think there is a FAQ on it, if not I have a link w/pics I will post when I return home. It is pretty easy to. I would replace it for peace of mind if it is bothering you, even if its not broken yet.

mine was a plastic one, and when it broke they could only find 80% of the impellor.... which was later found when my radiator needed changing due to a blockage.

Any good garage should be able to change your water pump, the worst bit is bleeding the coolant system on the 6 cylinders...... :thumbs

I read one write up that a guy can change the water pump in 20 minutes cause he has done it so many times, and he claims that you dont have to bleed the whole coolant system. just run all the air out and fill it back up when done. what you guys think

Best thing to do is change that water pump before any trouble occurs! Trust me, if you've been on the freeway going 80 and then have your engine temp totally hit the red you'll be kicking yourself for not changing it sooner.

here's a DIY. It's really EASY ==> http://www.ohiomotorcycle.com/understeer/waterpump.shtml
(Drain cooling system
Remove water pump pulley
4 bolts to remove water pump
put new water pump in
bolt pulley back on
put belt back on pulley (might have to release tensioner)
fill cooling system. Might as well do the fan delete while you're at it!)
