really about to display by bmw ignorance ...

i am wondering if my exhaust has been modded. i have the '97 328is, 2 door coupe. from the block back, it has 2 large (didn't measure, but they look at least 2 1/2", possibly 3") stainless pipes from the header, through a set of cats, then, after the cats, they shrink, are black, and go into what looks like the stock muffler, which has dual black, rounded rectangular tips. also, is that an emissions monitoring thingy plugged into the right exhaust tip? looks like a little sending unit, wired into the tip ...

Bear with me, I'm learning! This is my first foreign car, and boy is there a lot more engineering put into it!

:bow thanks!

that thingy in the right hand pipe should be a vacume operated flap that opens and closes when you boot it, its eigther to reduce noise around town or increase back pressure..... one or the other.

the flap works by a vacume..... when you boot it the flap opens.. so if you disconect the pipe it stays shut! i only know as i changed my exhaust for Hamann motor sport.....

have a look at my link below and you can see it! :thumbs

sounds like a stock exhaust. if the vaccumm is still attached then thats probably what it is. it creates backpressure at lower RPM's to give the car a little more power, then reopens the right exhaust pipe to give the more disired freeflow.
