Ive got a 93 318is, manual, does anyone have the gear ratio for this car.

also, does anyone know what the optimum RPM for shifting out of each gear is? This is my first manual, and my shifting is nothing to brag about, but getting better, it would help if i had a bit more info, cheers!


......also, sometimes when i pull off, the clutch bites hard, and i get a strong acceleration in first gear, but other times, it takes a few seconds for the power and speed to build up before i can shift, is this a tell'tell sign of things bad to come?

Where is peak power acheived on your engine i.e. what rpm? Changing up shortly after that point may be worth trying. :gulp

the reason you sometimes get a different rate of acceleration in 1st gear, on your car, has to do with the power band that you are in, just mainly one of those things you'll come to understand with lots of practice, and experience. Car's have powerbands, and your acceleration differs quite a bit depending on whether you are below it, or in it to initiate that maximum burst of power. It comes to be more important on cars that are turbocharged, as anytime you want to accelerate with boost you need to be up to at least the minimum RPM in able to spool the turbo's, but not too high as to not redline it before the turbo has time to spool-up. basic rundown on it... hope you can understand what I mean.

ah! that all makes perfect sense.

sooo, roughly what rpm should i be at prior to engaging first, and at what rpm&speed should I be coming out of 1rst, for optimum power and shift performance.

I have a 93 325is and its my first manual also, i know what u mean sometimes if im around 2k rpm and i let the clutch out i get a great burst of the line, but other times it sluggish and slow, i have also noticed that in first gear once i pass 5000 rpm the power actually starts to decline :dunno . Im trying to keep my car in good condition though and not wear it out, but i would be interested also in the peak power ranges....did that paragraph just make any sense at all?? im really tired...

Well ladies and gents, heres what i know.... first of all, i have a 328i 96.. 190 horses. My car's peak torque is at 5600 rpms... you can probably find yours at www.car-stats.com , or by doing a google search. your cars are probably simily b/c stock bmws general peak there... also the reason your cars have those change in powers, most of the time has to do with how warm your engine is, and how well and carefully you warmed it up, if not, your spark plugs might be misfirring, (unusual unless you haven't replaced in a while) basically if you want that real good burst, your engine temp needs to be just above the middle mark. thats the way it is in my 96 and my moms 98 z3... when your driving around, if you have warmed it up well, you will notice it will start running better, and it will feel like you have more power. Biggest thing is, dont run ur engine hard when its cold, but once its warmed up, push her a little... also one other thing that you could be experiencing is that, unless you have a really nice ignition set, it will take your car a while to get full torque compression/pressure in the cylinders, as it takes time to build up.... thats about it, hope u can get something out of that........ me and some friends had a great time working on a 1985 nissan pickup today, we were trying to improve its poor 2.0 4 cyl, but we were surprised to find that it has 2 sparks per cyl!!!
