So anyways, this morning/afternoon from 10 till 4 I was running all around town getting a new head unit for my car (got a nice Alpine unit from Cartoys). So I finally leave Car toys around 4. I'm heading home on this four lane boulevard type dealy. Traffic is moving around 40mph, as am I. I decide to merge, check mirrors, OK, check blindspot, crap there's another car there. So I look back ahead of me. While I've been checking my blindspot, the cars in front of me have completely stopped for whatever reason. So I'm going 40mph, and theres a stopped Jeep Grand Cherokee 20-25 feet in front of me. Me: 'Oh *@&#!'
So anyways, less than 20min after spending $400 on the car, my hood is ruined, windshield is horribly cracked, and pretty much everthing above the level of the bumper and in front of the engine block is destroyed. My (somewhat) new ellipsoids/DDEs are destroyed. There were random bits of BMW plastic all over the road. Both foglights went flying out of the mountings. Not sure if there's anything structural yet. Both SUVs (the Cherokee in front of me bumped into a huge ass Lexus SUV ahead of him) looked like they just bumped into a pillar at a garage or something (minor damage (dents/scratches) to fenders.
:pissed2 :nope
:cry :cry

I'll post pics tomorrow with some more info about the extent of the damage.

Just finished giving my statement to the insurance. I'll most likely be blamed for it, unless they find out that there was a collision between the two SUVs first, in which case I'd only be partially responsible. And the shop that we took it to (one we used for my dad's car, good place) is apparently no longer a 'preferred shop', so we'll probably have to get some other shop to do it *sigh*. Hopefully the insurance evaluators can take a look at it before the end of the week.

Any of you guys had to deal with similar damage? The guy at the shop said ~$5k in damage would total it, so I don't think it's totalled. Of course, I have no clue how much that kind of damage would cost to repair.

Oh yes, and one of the cops actually asked me if I thought I could drive that home. :wtf

The whole fender will need to be replaced. It got gashed pretty good right above the license plate, I think that was his exhaust tip or something. I suppose I'll have to retrieve my Conforti chip and head unit if they total it - anyone know the rules about swapping aftermarket parts for OEM or whatnot if they decide to total it? If they total it I better be able to get my brand new head unit back.

Also, anyone know the likelyhood of frame problems with this type of collision? I'm worried that the frame might have gotten warped when my car went under the SUV. If it is messed up, I guess I might as well start looking for another car :(

Also, should I worry about someone deciding to make off with some of the more valuable parts of the engine? The shop its at (well, the shop where it's sitting in the parking lot) is in the middle of this big industrial type center. I suppose there isn't much I can do about it really.

If they total it (which they probably will) you should buy it back for the salvage title. You cna then strip the shit out of it and sell parts on ebay. You can take what you want and go to town.

If I were you I would go to the wrecking yerd it is at and take what I could before they total it. I had a car totalled and they gave me hell about taking shit out of it after they had done so.

Best of luck, I hope it all works out for you.

Does anyone know the exact laws/rules about what happens if they declare it totalled? If the insurance declares it totalled, wouldn't we have some time to get things out of it that I would want (such as the brand new head unit, Conforti chip) since we would have to sign the title over to them first before they could take it? Or can they just take it as soon as they decide that it's totalled? My parents are also talking about just fixing it anyways even if they declare it totalled, which to me seems like a waste of time while we wait months probably, and to me it seems like if they declare it totalled it's probably for a reason.

Also, how much would it cost to buy it back after it's totalled? There is a ton of stuff in there that's perfectly OK and that I could sell for parts easily, such as everything from the engine back.

Ugh. The insurance officially decided that I was at fault (not a suprise really) :(. Conveniently, the guy in the Jeep Cherokee started complaining of 'neck pains'. That guy is just an asshole. First of all he insists on a tow truck even though he doesn't need one (so I had to wait longer and to rack up the stuff my insurance will have to pay for), now he suddenly has neck pains even though HE DECLINED THE ERS when they came! :eek:uch :guns (I did have the ERs check me out when they came, even though I didn't feel hurt, because that's the intelligent thing to do when they are ALREADY THERE)

*sigh*, now the insurance company is going to be like :do-me until I'm much older.

They still haven't taken a look at my car though.

The insurance company still needs to actually take a look at it and decide what they want to do. So no plans ATM.

Most probably(Spelling) the car will be totalled from my point of view. From the picture, the repair will be more than the value of the car.
So i wonder about the lexus? It's totalled too?
