I hate this server bump happened. I had to wait till today to get the info info in the posts KC, can you repost what you had here?

I am looking at a 325es that i tried to start a few days ago, and it wouldn't start. Add a little starting fluid to the equation, and it fired right up, then died, like it was starving for fuel. Where are the fuel pumps on this car? Are they audible? How could i check for them working other than checking fuse 11 under the hood? What else should i look for?

the e30 has two fuel pumps, one intank on the fuel pickup and one external.

The external is the main pump and is the larger of the two.

Here is a diagram of the fuel pump control.

Fuse #11 is the primary fuse.
Shorting the pin 30 to pin 87 on the fuel pump relay will bypass all controls.

Fuel pump relay is outside the fuse box and the wires to it are the
Red, Red with white stripe, Green with Violet stripe, and Brown with green stripe.




If the pumps work with the fuel pump relay bypassed the issue is a fuel control signal.

There are a few things in that circuit.
Fuse #21, OBC relay, Main relay, and the ECU signal.

Thanks for the info KC. That should help alot.

someone told me something about cleaning the contacts on one end of the engine position sensor too, do you guys know anything about that? something about the sensor or connector near the airbox?

In my 325, the fuses that control the pump are 9 through 11 and the relay is in the auxiliary relay panel (the little box to the left of the main fuse relay panel, toward the front of the car), there's 3 relays in there and the fuel pump relay is in the middle. I had the exact same problems a few weeks ago, went through almost an entire can of ether trying to get her running and ended up being a bad relay. A quick test would be to swap a known working relay (headlights, etc) with the fuel pump relay and see if that works.

Have you tested the cold start valve? It's doubtful that valve or thermo switch/sensor is bad because it won't stay running, but it's another thing to remove from the equation.

It really helps to get the Bentley manual, it gives lots of advice for troubleshooting various components of your BMW. I am in love with my manual...
