Hi all, i'm new to the site and to BM ownership. I've just bought a 98 E39 520 in pretty average condition, while i was vacuuming the carpets i looked under the front seats and noticed that all the wires from the seats had been cut. I Know these wires are for the airbag sensors (the airbag warning light is on) but i can't understand why they would be cut. I want to reconnect them but I'm worried about the airbags going off if i do!
Can anyone think of any reason apart from trying to put the warning light out, that anyone would cut them?
Great site and forum, already helped alot.
Thanks

Welcome to the Werkz

All the wires on both front seats are cut, or just the front passengers?

If they are all cut, none of the electric seat functions will work. What they were most likely trying to do was cut off the occupancy sensor mat on the passengers seat which is prone to failure, you can make up a fairly cheap circuit to overcome that issue, but you will need the error code cleared to get rid of the warning light. To avoid any triggering issues, just disconnect the battery and then start your repair work, make sure you insulate the repairs and position the wires so that they don't get pinched or over tensioned when the seat is moved. The occupancy sesnor mat wires usually run up the base of the back seat and are just visible in the middle of the seat base when view from the rear seat foot well (normally 3 wires from memory)

OK depends on your seats. Your drivers seat will have 2 wires to the seatbelt restraint system, your passenger seat will have the two same black wires plus a set of colour wires for the occupancy seat sensor. You can buy a little box to act as a bypass socket to plug into the colour wires of the occupancy sensor but you'll need to rewire the seatbelt restraints and buy a reset tool (approx £50) to remove the airbag light from the dash. (unplugging the battery just won't work)

Any other wires that may be cut could be electric adjustment, heated, side airbags or a mixture of the three. The most likely reason why they're cut is someone has replaced the seats for more or less expensive seats at some point in the past. There are a number of sockets for each type to add to the confusion so it seems like this guy just thought sod it and cut them.
