Hey guys, i'm new to this board so bear with me. I haven't much knowledge about BMW's but i've always liked them. Anyways, I tried to search function so I dont have to bug you guys, but it didnt work for some reason. Something about me not permitted due to the high number of matches to use certain keywords.

I own a mitsubishi eclipse right now and its a nice little car to have fun with, but i've always been intent on getting a BMW. I've saved up enough money for something nice. My mom owns an 2000 E46 328Ci and has owned other BMW's so i've loved driving them. I'm looking to buy a used E36 M3 or 328. Since I own a turbocharged car, natrually i'm gonna want to turbo the BMW. One question is what is the max horsepower you can get from stock internals on the engines from both the M3 and 328? Also, I dont want to spend tons of money on kits up to $10,000 for over 400 hp. I know that it can be done for less. I'm wanting a fast street car that could run high 11's low 12's with minium modification to the internals of the engine. I'm new to BMW's so the biggest question is, should I buy myself a 328 and turbocharge that because i'd have a lot more money to work with. Or would I be more satisfied with an M3 and saving money to turbocharge later? I know M3's are nice, but to have a fast car is it really necessary to buy the M3 for engine power? If the 328 can put out as much power as the M3, i'd rather save my money.

Turbo E36 M3's are insane :wacko:, try active autowerkes (AA)'s website for turbo info, but there are cheaper alternatives out there

depends on what kind of money you have to spend here. there can be quite a difference in $ between buying a 328 and m3 and then turbocharging on top of that could end up being very expensive.

E36 M3s make 13s stock, so 12s and 11s are easy. 328s are pretty hard to find performance parts for, you're better off with either an M3 or a 325. Mech Tech is the most cost effective, but it's laggy. I'd go with an Active Autowerkes kit myself.

i've looked and the AA kits are up to $10,000. Knowing how much turbo's cost from wanting to mod the eclipse, i'm not wanting to pay 10 grand. I went the the AGP website and found a kickass setup for a turbo good up to 500 hp for about 1,600. The only thing I really need to find is a custom manifold for the BMW. Then I need to find an intercooler (which is about 1,000) that can fit into a BMW bumper. If needed, I can always cut and mold the bumper around the intercooler. Then I need an exhaust system. After that comes piping which shouldn't be the hardest thing to do. Then of course comes the CBV, air filter, external wastegate, injectors, fuel pump, boost controller, etc. Really, when you think about it, the turbo is the main concern on how much horsepower you get. So why I should pay up to 10,000 when I can spend half as much just by knowing what I need. And the funny thing too, on the AA website the use a Mitsubishi TD06 Turbo. Basically they charge you a ton of money for stuff that if you researched you could do yourself. I do admit the custom piping, ECU and manifold is something that cant be done as easily by youself, but there is no reason to pay that much. If I were to buy anything from AA, it would be the exhaust, computer software, and piping. I can get the turbo and other stuff anywhere else.

Back to my one question, how much power can the M3 engine produce without having to change stock internals? If I can get up to 500bhp without touching the engine, then this project will be cheap. Because AA seems to make the kits as bolt ons without any cams, pistons, etc. included in the package. For 10 grand i'd expect some engine work to be done as well but i guess not. I just see AA as an alternative for really rich people to just blow the money. I'd rather save the money and put it into a bodykit or something like that.

AGP turbo The turbo's they have there are ball bearing turbo's and produce minimal lag with reaching full boost at lower RPM's. I'd rather pick out my turbo myself instead of getting whatever is in the kit and then boost as much as I feel necessary.
