Hi All,
Just bought a 1999 540i on a whim.....was gonna get a slk230 convertible, but the BMW sedan on bimmer 18" chrome wheels with 35 series tires grabbed my attention! It was A local dentist's car and has 85k miles on it...and i talked to HER, it was 80% highway miles between Yuma and Phoenix, AZ, and she was the original owner.
Anything I need to look out for on this car? Runs perfect (except for the terrible throttle response....guess that is normal for the automatics.....) and everything looks and works like new. I changed the oil with castrol full synthetic last week, and had the service lights reset.
I read in the book that the auto tranny fluid is lifetime........do any of you have it changed???
I am very mechanically and electronically proficient.......what problems do these cars have?....... This will be my commuter, as the previous owner used it for.

Thanx in advance for the input, Nick

Great choice for a Biimer. There a few problems that you'll have to look for, especially if you are in a warmer climate. When BMW says that the tranny fluid is lifetime, they aren't kidding. It really is the case, and so far i haven't had a problem (540ia, with 150,000 miles) Some common problems are first the control arm busings. The design of them simply isnt very good. Good luck!

You might want to check the service records. Have the brake fluid changed if is been awhile. DON'T try this yourself without the proper equipment. The ABS won't like it. Same thing with the antifreeze. Change it if the records aren't clear. The dealer should provide the computer maintenance records. PS when the stealer changed my coolant they used tap water. Never again. This you can do yourself With a Bently Repair Manual. If this is your first Beemer read up on it and think like a German. Great Car :cheers
