I have MK IV unit in my BMW e39 and i want to upgrade the software, and i guess i have the oldest version, do i have to upgrade through all version to V31 or can i upgraded directly from my old version to v31?

To properly upgrade your software you should visit a BMW dealer and request them to update your Navigation software. But you could also read this Tips.
