first you need to find out what side is leaking is it exhaust to manifold or manifold to block either way it is most likely the gasket which means cleaning and replaceing with new gasket.depending on state of manifold studs they might need to be replaced as well.

I would certainly have someone competent check it out. Sounds like someone worked on your car before that shouldn't have. Agreed, it certainly depends on exaxtly where the exhaust leak is coming from. If it is coming from the manifold to cylinder head gasket, then you need to determine why. These beemers don't just blow exhaust manifold gaskets for no reason. Somebody has had that manifold offf before you bought it. Either there is a cracked manifold, distorted clamping surface (ie manifold surface or cylinder head surface) or a missing bolt/ improperly torqued. If the leak is coming from the manifold to exhaust pipe connection, then either the pipe is not being installed correctly or there is an issue with the securring hardware. Have it checked out by a quality professional. Don't take it to just any quicky oil/lube place (no comment). What area are you in?

Do some research with people around where you live who have BMW's. Find out where they have taken their cars to and if they were satisfied. Obviously select a shop that specializes in BMW's.
