Hi Folks; yes, I did post this in another forum as well. Sorry for any repetition. So here goes...

My son bought a '98 540i last fall and has really enjoyed it. Of course, ownership came with responsibilities. We've replaced the valve cover gaskets, the crank vent valve behind the intake, the MAF, cam pos sensor (preventive), and usual periodic maintenance. Already replaced by the PO were the valley pan gasket, chassis subframe bushings, radiator, w. pump, radiator belt fan, sun roof tracks, among the regular tune up parts.

I'm thinking of buying my wife a 5 series circa 2000 - 2002. I already have a few other vehicle labor obligations besides. Is there any appreciable reliability gain from selecting a 6 cyl 5 series over the 4.4L ? Or vice-versa?
