Juan Pablo Montoya has played down his new status as a world championship contender following his dominant victory in the German Grand Prix.

The Colombian Williams star is only six points adrift of Michael Schumacher with four races to go, with McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen a further three points behind.

Montoya said: "I am not talking about it or thinking about it. There are four races to go so anything can happen but we have just to keep on scoring points.

"I am in a much better position than I was before Monaco [when he won his first race of the season] but things can change quickly as we saw what happened to Michael who went from second to seventh."

Schumacher was demoted by a late-race puncture on his Ferrari.

Ferrari technical director Ross Brawn said: "It was such a hard race that to come through in second place was a tribute to Michael. To have it snatched away like that was really cruel.

Montoya, who McLaren are trying to lure away from Williams, has now taken two wins, three second places and a third in the last six races.

"It was a perfect day but it all went really well the whole weekend," said Montoya.

"It is just fantastic to win again."

Michael Schumacher said: "Obviously I am disappointed to finish only seventh after a tough race which could have brought me eight points.

"Now I have only two, but at least I am still leading the championship. As I expected, Williams are now emerging as our main rival.

"Four races to go, it's going to be very close and the battle for the title will be very exciting, just as we expected. I am looking forward to the fight."

It is time someone dethroned Schumacher. I really like Montoya. He was my favorite CART driver. He may well be able to fill Ayrton Senna's shoes.
