I am looking to purchase an E55 AMG or M5 within the next 2-3 weeks. I want to know what is the best vehicle out of the two? What is more expensive and is good at racing! I also want to know if the M5 is available for this 2004 model year.
Please, if you hate Mercedes don't be bias!

This would be a hard decision for me. If the new E60 M5 was already out I doubt there would even be an option.

I must admit the power and stats of the new E55 AMG are very tempting, but the problem is you get an automatic. I really think that if it came down to making the decision I would still go with the E39 M5, it may not be as powerful but it has a manual and its more of a drivers car. Still having E55 AMG power would be a lot of fun.

the E60 M5 will be out next year. 550HP along with the 6 speed manual transmissions and all. I would say go for the E39 M5 if you can find one new. Like Cam said much more of a drivers car.

You're looking at two high end performance vehicles. One is an automatic, one is a stick. You can't seriously believe this to be a valid comparison...get the M5.

the M5 and the E55 are some very nice cars.

if you want to spend less money, good handling, good track car, and a 6 speed manual then the M5 is what you should get. but if you want to spend more money, more luxury, more power, not a good track car, good in a straight line and automatic then you should get the E55.

no matter what you get youll be getting a nice car and ordinary people wouldnt know what model your car is. only car eunthusiast will know what kind of car you have.

but for my opinion on which car you should get i say the M5

"Normal People" are literate, and can read the model number on the back of your car.

Thanks for the replies! I think I will wait for the next M5. Does anyone know how much an M5 costs? Anyone know if ther will be an M7? I would wait for an M7, if it is available, but we'll see.
Thanks!

Please buy the M5. The Mercedez is nice, with all the power, all the luxury...etc. But you're paying more, you're getting an AUTOMATIC, plus the Benz just doesn't race or handle as well. Do yourself a favor as a driver who actually has the money to buy one. Buy the M5. If you really want to, wait for the new M5. Then buy that. It has everything the current M5 does not. It comes out in Sept. 2004. Good luck and happy hunting.

Should I buy the M5 right now, and then should I trade it in with the next M5 or M7? Doesn't BMW offer something that gives you the option to have either automatic or manual transmission? I really would appreciate an M7! My daughter just got an M3 for herself and really loves it!
Thanks for any input!

Not sure if they will even make an M7. It sounds like you have money so buy an M5 now and then trade up for a new one in a year, or if you want to save the money you'll lose on resale then wait.

BMW does not offer an automatic with the M5, but you could buy a 540 and take it to dinan for a supercharger.

What a nice decision to be faced with.

Just out of curiosity - it sounds like you want a track car as well as a daily driver. Why not get the M3? It is a better, faster track car and gives up nothing to the M5 on the street other than the extra two doors. The two doors are very nice from a practicality standpoint, but that is about it. There is simply not enough difference in interior dimensions between the E46 and the E39 to make it a big point of argument - at least most people don't think so.

There will be no M7. But it appears an M6 is forthcoming. :poke :D

Doesnt the M5 typically RAPE the m3?
According to carstats.com (probably an arguable source but a good indication)

E39 M5

0-60... 4.9
1/4 mile... 13.4

E46 M3

0-60... 4.8
1/4... 13.6

As one would expect, larger displacement and HP come into play at top speeds, but the M3 has a slight advantage to 60 mph and is right there at ~110 mph. The M3 is lighter and more agile. All things being equal on the track, the M3 walks the M5.

well i kind of meant just at a glance. "Normal people" would mostly just say like oh its another BMW or Benz. they wont take the time to check the car out. especially on the road its hard to tell if its an E55 because theres nothing that makes it stand out from the rest of the Eclass but the rims.

even if they see the E55 or ///M badge they won't know that it means anything.

The M-Series is also identifiable due to the "ridges" on the sides of the car, under the side-view mirriors.

thats only on the new M3s. but all the M series have the twin dual exhausts.

and what cam540 said is what i also meant to. hah

Man for a BMW forum, alot of people don't know as much as they should. First of all, even if the do make an M7, you're looking at a 3 year wait...minimum. Although the M7 would most obviously be a sick car, IT DOESN'T EXIST. Niether does the M6 until much later. You'll want a BMW. No bullshit. Step one is deciding that Mercedez is not the car for you, and step two is realizing that you need an M. Now that you're at step 2, it's down to which M you'll want. If you're going to be driving around town alot, going to work and going to the local streets, you'll want an E46 M3. Only get the SMGII option if you think you'll use it. Alot of jerk-offs spend the extra 2,400 and don't take the time to learn ALL of its advantages. Spend the remaining amount of money that you saved from the M5, and use it on the M3. Intake, Exhaust, Intercooling, Gutting, etc. Lighten up the car and tune it down to real specs. Shit, you'll probably get better gas mileage for work and shit. Peace.

there is no word for a m7 anyway. they already have the m6 ready to go. they just want to allow the 6 to be out for one year first before they make an ///m version of it. also, theres no major upgrades that you can do to an e46 m3. its pretty much track-ready. gruppeM has an intake for it and theres many aftermarket exhausts available, but this wont add a very noticeable amount of horsepower.
