i know this is gonna sound like such a noob question, but im asking out of sheer curiousity. is it possible to put the e46 m3 3.2L engine into a e46 323i? if it is, does the transmission need to be changed? how much would it cost? for the sake of maturity please dont flame me b/c im asking out of curiousity.

you would probably match the price of a M3 less than half way through the conversion. the M3 is much more than a more powerful E46 coupe, you would miss out on the M variable lock differential, brakes, the M3's suspension geometry, and the looks. you would deffiantely need the transmission, probably a stronger driveshaft, and the full exhaust, which on a M3 isnt cheap at all

Wouldn't attempt such a task even if I was mechanically inclined.....and I mean REALLY mechanically inclined.
And let's not forget the cost of the labor involved when that isn't the case....

In short, BMWs are not built like Ford or Chevy musclecars......
the difference between a 330Ci and an M3 is MUCH, MUCH greater than the difference between say,
a Ford Mustang Gt and a Cobra.

Would be nice if it were feasible, though..... :rock

thats sounds pretty low for a full exhaust setup, but new or aftermarket they would be much higher, easily exceeding $1k

if you put a supercharger in your car, you could go as fast or even faster than an m3. I'tll cost you around 4k for this though

I have seen this done on the e36 models, the best was a 318ti with the M3 engine in it. I want to say it cost them over $10K, the engine bolted in to the stock tranny perfectly. So it is feasible but would cost you a lot. Save the money and buy yourself a real M3(probably still too much) or buy a supercharger that would put you 323 at around 270 Hp($5-6K).
