i was thumbing through the june issue of roundel while on the can, and came across this info that i missed previously. pretty neat:

Information about the 2 Series-based M2 is beginning to trickle out of BMW M's command center in Garching, including the news that its power may come from a new small-displacement in-line six-cylinder engine that just might do away with camshafts in favor of electronically operated valves. Expect this new M special in 2006.
w00 electronic valve timing... perhaps swapping cams could be a thing of the past if tuners come out with a chip (a-la JC, Dinan, etc.)--instead of performance cams, you can get performance valve chips :)
what would rock is if the M2 were up to par with or surpasses the E36 M3 performance-wise, since they are making the new M3 a V8 monster:

Responding to the credible threat posed by the V8 Audi S4, the next-generation M3, based on the E90 3 Series, will be V8 powered. It will be available--at least in Europe--in sedan, convertible, and sport-wagon configurations. A launch date in 2006 is anticipated for the coupe, with other models to follow in 2007. Since marketing plans call for E90 coupes and convertibles to form the basis of the new 4 Series, will BMW forsake the M3 icon nameplate and re-badge these as M4s?

i cant even count how many times ive heard about a new 1 and 2 series, its in just about every newspaper and magazine article i see that involves bmw. even tho roundel is pretty much the top bmw mag out there, their predictions are known to be way off and even they cant always see what bmw has up their sleeve. bmw has so much ahead of them such as the new 5, 6, 6cabrio, 7series facelift, X3, M5, M6, Mroadster, then before you know it it'll be time for the new 3series i just dont see bmw throwing in a brand new 1or2 series anytime soon, especially after releasing the mini and seeing how the Xtype is tearing down jaguar

i dont like the hole v8 in a m3 thing. v10 in a 5 is fine but they are just pokin the m3 with a silly stick. Makin it to big and bulgy i think, luckily they are using CSL now but still. Anyone notice a trend.... 2002 > 320 > 323 > s14 > 325 > 328 > 332 (m3) > 330 Bmw just keeps adding 2 cylinders every 15 years it seems and gradually stepping up the displacement every year. Whereas american cars started huge muscle cars they are now going to smaller 6 and 4 cylinder engines. I predict that BMW is going to start making muscle cars that get 9 mpg. I dont like these trends...

what was the projected HP for the new M3? something like 400HP , so what are they using? the E39 M5 engine? that will be impressive seeing is how they used to use that same combo in racing.

right now the M3 GTR uses a 4.0L 400hp V8 P60 engine which will probably be what the new M3's engine is based on. the M5's S62 is a 4.94L V8
