So, as of this morning (7/23/2010) at approximately 9:30AM I am now an official owner of a 2011 M3 coupe. I placed the order and the list is as follows...

Space gray metallic
Red Novillo leather
Carbon leather interior trim
Premium package
19" optional wheels
iPod integration
Navigation
EDC delete

I won't see this car until early or mid October as it has to be built and it is part of Septembers production but I got an amazing deal on this car and I'm pretty excited to take delivery. I know it's almost August but I want October to be here so bad right now...

I test drove a M3 this morning just to get a taste and the car moves so effortlessly and feels so solid. I remember getting back into my car, taking a look around, and thinking to myself how dated my E39 feels and looks in comparison to the M3.

G - Did you get the Tech package =- with the ///M Dynamic Mode and EDC controls, or just get it set at Sport plus and that's it?? What do you mean by EDC delete?

I didn't get the technology package specifically because I don't want EDC. Getting the premium package and navigation gives me M-Drive and all its functions without EDC. The reason why I don't want EDC is I will inevitably lower this car and I don't want to deal with the hassle of buying the EDC delete modules for all 4 corners of the car. Plus it's one less electronic thing to get in the way.

Ahh yess - -now I remember form my options picking dayze on my E93 that was not to be....you can get the M Dynamic Mode while bypassing the EDC - saving $$ and avoiding the lowering later delete issue. Nicely done my friend! See YOU on the Road pally...Watch for the scary black car passing you....:shifty , no not that M5 you're thinking of...LOL

And remeber one single thing I've learned - you can only push these babies sooo much - you can push em and push em good, but at a certain point they were just not built to handle stuff (e.g. taking my car into the 190's with old body kit got a bit unstable and the stress started to crumble the gybo, liners. Um, I have a NEW GYBO - so I should be GOOD for a few runs...:D

So happy for you bro. Treasure it, that is the ONLY good reason for getting a depreciating asset like this new with all your hard saved/earned/beloved $$. If you enjoy it regularly, it IS worth it - because of its value to YOU - screw what any non-believer says...

Glad it worked out Gareth. This will be an exciting time, when you finally get it the anticipation will have built up to an unbearable level and make it all the sweeter when you drive off in it.

Yeah, right. It won't be waiting for you when you come and pick it up. :rofl

I don't really care for the entire EDC system. Just seems to be additional crap that you don't really need. The non EDC car I drove this morning seemed just fine as it was. Overall, it was very solid and planted at all speeds and all road surfaces unlike my E39. I'm used to that stupid low car behavior right now so I'm sure that factors into it. I'll be seeing you on the road and don't think I'm going to let your scary black car pass without a fight. :rofl And c'mon, you know that M5 and the driver is always on my mind.

Well, hopefully after the break in process I'll be able to find a road somewhere where I can find that reasonable limit. I just know that this is a big step to go from a modified, basic bolt on 528i (maybe 200-215hp if I'm lucky) to a standard 414hp right off the lot (and I think that 414hp figure is under rated because the car I drove today felt very ballsy especially in the low end of the power band) it ends up being a major difference in power and feel. I'm going to take it easy for awhile...at least for the first 1200 miles. :D

I've always wanted an M3, and the fun I'm going to have with it is worth more than the money. I could save the money and invest it (which would have been smarter) but I have the rest of my life to worry about saving. I just want to have fun right now and that's more important.

Yeah, I should go down there and drive one every day. I'll def post pics once it gets here for sure.

True man...I'm already getting antsy waiting for this car and I just ordered it. :D

Wow---you must feel like a virgin waiting for the wedding day! (Sorry--we're headed to a wedding today, so that just popped up.) Speaking of popping up--one of the guys I work with just ordered an '11 Z28 that he'll pick up this weekend; I told him I expected he would have a sore Johnson when I saw him on Monday, because if I was picking up a car like this I would have wood all weekend!
If I was picking up a new M I would just soil myself!

Congrats and it will be Oct before you know it.
Yeah, I just have to keep myself busy in the meantime and stop looking at the calendar.

I went with the traditional 3rd pedal setup. The E92 I test drove had a 6-speed and it felt so right that DCT couldn't even be an option. Not to mention replacing two clutches on the DCT when they wear out is more than likely going to cost huge $$$.

I also wanted to play it safe with the 6 speed as well because like not getting EDC it's one less electronic thing to get in the way. Not to mention the concept of F/I down the road makes the 6 speed ultra appealing as the Getrag 226 (I think that's what the E92 has) can handle quite a bit of power more reliably than a DCT ever could.

Plus chicks dig guys who drive a stick...

The M3 is definitely going to pop my performance car cherry for sure so I guess the virgin bride analogy works well enough. :rofl The Z28 Camaro is a very nice car and the inferno orange is probably the best looking color that is offered on it. I loved the concept and I'm glad GM kept the production model nearly identical. It's just a shame that the thing is a whale on 4 wheels. :rofl

I know when this car gets here I'm going to make the drive down from school to pick it up. I don't even care if I miss classes that day. I'll just tell my professors that I'm not feeling good and I needed to drive home to see my doctor... :D

sick dude congrats
Thank you!

Congratz......Gareth! Are you keeping "Layla" ?

jb :)
Thanks a bunch! Yes, JB, the E39 is staying with me. :D She's been faithful and loyal so I'm not turning my back on her anytime soon or preferably ever. I still have things I want to do with the E39 and I plan on still having plenty of fun with her. Besides, the way I look at it is I'll have a nice slow n' low sedan for hauling ass and a fast insane coupe for hauling ass. It's a win win. :rofl

Driving people wouldn't want the DCT. DCT is a transmission that fills two market segments for the M3...

1) People who want to track the car and want perfect shifts (because let's face it, even the most skilled driver can still mis-shift from time to time).

2) People who can't drive a manual, don't want to learn to drive a manual, and are just lazy.

Like I've said before, the good old fashioned 3rd pedal is perfect for a fun street driven car and that's exactly what this M3 is going to be for me.

That 7th gear is pretty much useless except for the fact it makes the overall differences in the gear rations slightly tighter. I think the 6 speed has a lower 1st and 6th gear ratio over the DCT which means the 6 speed is better off the line. I also think the M3 has the 3.62 differential that the M5 and M6 use but the DCT uses a different differential to keep the performance of the DCT equal off the showroom floor with the manual.

Very well said G! +1 indeed! :thumbs

and funny as it is - I first thought Mr. Sidlosky meant the 5 speed versus 6 speed of the E36 M3 vs. The E46 M3 but I don't even know truthfully whether the E36 is a 5 or a 6 speed! ( Ok - I admit it..) aren't I silly??

Anyway - nicely put! Enjoy every mile!
