Hi, I got my first BMW looked long and hard for it a 1995 E34 525i Black/Black 5 Speed 140K miles Interior is perfect all black no wood trim (this is actually the look I was going for and wanted) body is great few minor door dings that I hope can be paintless repaired. A few problems I have already fixed since getting car in December 2009 a few more to address.

List of what I have done:

1. Upper control arms (shimmy while breaking)
2. Door stop on driver door repaired (Metal on door caved in)
3. Grill replaced w/530 Wide Grill (Same grill mine was smashed 95 cars have wide hood/grill)
4. Upgraded European Clear Lights all around
5. Guibo (Flex disc) 140K original from 1995
6. Transmission Mounts

Next on list:

1. Driveshaft (hear a ticking noise under acceleration when shifting through gears noise goes away when at speed or on hwy.)
2. Wheel Bearings (hear road noise especially when breaking and coming to a stop)

Overall I am impressed with car power and handling is great for a mid sized car....full sized by today's standards. I loved this body style for many years had to get it some day. Ever since I saw the car chase sequence in the movie "Ronin" (Robert De Nero M5/535i cars) I knew someday I had to get this car. Only an M5 would be better but can't afford the M5 and upkeep the 525i is pretty reasonable parts are abundant and easy to find and this is a daily driver.

Thanks All

I wouldnt rush in to changing all the above straight away,

1. Can be a number of things even your trans on the way out, change the box fluid and filter first could be low on fluid or the propshaft couplings or even a camshaft rattle.

2. I had this problem so I changed the discs/rotors, pads and wheel bearings (Bilsteins) , still had the same noise, changed the tyres....sorted.

Hi, I have a 5 speed tranny the oil was topped off but now that i have been driving it more i suspect the tranny itself. I feel the vibration on the shifter as I shift through the gears. It shifts fine but under acceleration 1st - 4th I hear and feel this clicking noise gets less and less as I shift through the gears and disappears in 5th.

Hmmmm...does sound like the transmission, but its only got 140k on it they normally last longer than that, but then it does depend on how its been driven in the past.

I had that on my 535 and it eventually became full blown smashing, not just clicking.

Ended up being the driveshaft center bearing being completely torn apart; under light acceleration the driveshaft would catch the heat shield and make the clicking ... under hard acceleration it was flat out smashing the floor because there was nothing to hold it centered at the joint. Definitely something worth having looked at before you snap the thing (if it starts to get much worse).

I'm just surprised I didn't make mine go through the floor of the car .... I drove the thing like I stole it for like 3000 miles with it clicking and smashing before I knew what was up. Dumping the clutch on like a 4000 rpm launch with that thing ... not for the faint of heart. :help

This is what it looked like when we got it off the car (notice where the casing was supposed to be attached to the rubber part) :Rofl

Hi, now that I have been paying closer attention to this noise I also hear it in neutral while rolling, very faint but can hear it and feel it on the shifter doesn't matter if I have clutch in or out sounds like a cv bearing going out. The only time the noise completely goes away is in 5th gear everything becomes quite regardless of speed???? Could this be my transmission??? Thanks

update: I replaced the drive shaft with a rebuilt unit, it solved one problem as the csb was worn, but I still feel a vibration when shifting through gears 1 - 4 I can hear it clicking and feel the vibration through the shifter when in gear. My mechanic suggested changing the transmission fluid from ATF to the Redline MTL Gear Oil any suggestions?

I have the clicking noise in mine too. It only happens when shifting gears. So if you find anything out please tell. Maybe it will fix mine too!

Bummer. I'm really stumped.

I don't think changing the gear oil will help ... sure as hell doesn't sound like it's internal components of the transmission.

Update clicking noise...

Well it turns out the clicking noise was the tranny main shaft bearing (Getrag 260 5 speed) held out as long as I could it was shifting fine in all gears but man it was making a machining noise and was embarrased you could here me coming.... tick...tick...tick $2K rebuild hope it lasts another 15 years runs smooth shifts perfect..
