Sussex-based BMW specialist has been impressed with the upgrade following extensive on-road testing
During development of the recently launched Apollo Balanced Big Brake Kit for the F20-series BMW M140i, EBC Brakes Racing was pleased to work alongside respected BMW specialist, Hack Engineering, who assisted with the fine-tuning of the product on its very own long-term project vehicle, dubbed ‘HE140i’.
With a finalised Storm Shadow Blue version of the brake kit eventually installed on the hot hatchback in December 2021, the team have since been putting it to the test on their favourite local back roads, reporting very promising results.

Hack Engineering’s company founder Ben Koflach’s views on the product can be read below in his own words.
“With the modern petrolhead’s attention often being so focused on horsepower numbers on tuned cars, it’s easy to forget that braking is an area that quickly becomes quite literally overpowered.
“The latest Hack Engineering project vehicle is BMW’s pocket rocket, the M140i. Despite a factory Brembo four-piston caliper setup, the brakes were seriously lacking. Thankfully, EBC Brakes Racing was keen to get some testing behind its F2X/F3X 1/2/3/4-Series big brake kits, and so we were happy to oblige!
“The setup uses EBC’s UK-made four-piston calipers, 355mm two-piece floating discs and Yellowstuff pads. To say they work better than the originals is an understatement; the M140i has been transformed from an overpowered hatch into a track day weapon in the making, with the ability to pull your face half off on demand.
“It works well from cold, is perfectly daily-driveable and yet has progressive, controllable stopping power far beyond the original capabilities of the braking system. The perfect match to a tuned, modern hyper-hatch!”

Hack Engineering’s HE140i project is set to receive a raft of other modifications aimed at improving driver performance over the coming months, all of which will be documented over on the company’s YouTube channel.
Based in Lewes, East Sussex, Hack Engineering has fast become one of the most respected performance BMW specialists in the country. Offering everything from general workshop services through to full-blown engine rebuilds in its dedicated machine shop, the team eats, sleeps and breaths BMWs.
