Aight Fellas,

I'm new here. I've read a lot on Speaker sizes. I have a 1996 4 dr 318i, 6 speaker option. I'm trying to upgrade it all. I'm going for Infinity Kappa Components in the front Kicks and Infinity Kappa coaxials in the rear deck. Now, here's the kick in the face. I see so much on Speaker sizes and what they actually are is always varying. Someone said to go to Crutchfield for the sizes. They were right about the 5 1/4s in the front. But it said my car had 5 1/4s in the rear as well. Went out, bought some 5 1/4s and went to install-oops...they don't fit :pissed2 . I come to find out that the rear speakers are actually this entire apparatus that BMW put together to stick back there :confused . The speaker itself in the apparatus is a midrange, what appears to be a 5 1/4 speaker, but that hangs below the actual hole in the deck. The whole in the deck itself appears to be about 4 inches, hence most people saying 4inchers fit in the rear deck. After all this build up, I hope this is clear- Will 4inch speakers fit in the back of my Beemer? Or do I need some kind of custom build to replace that stupid little stock apparatus?

Also, I have never heard anyone else mention this stock speaker apparatus...anyone know what I am talking about? Or am I just a wack-job? Thanks to anyone who can help...

I have the same setup in my car that you do. You need to pop the grill off from the top and there should be 4 screws going through the top that holds the enclosure from the top. I took the factory stuff out and thought it would be cool to stick with the enclosure to get a better sound, so I rounded up some Eclipse 2 way coaxials for the 4 inch holes and some Kicker tweeters for the tweeter part..I stuck the crossover down inside the enclosure and tapped off of the plug on the back of the enclosure to go to my amp..Later I will take that stuff out and install a nice Eclipse component set in there..For now I just stuck what i could in there..Hope I helped some!

Awesome info...but will a 4in coaxial fit into the whole where the factory screw holes are for the enclosure? I took them out and figured it all out, but the actual speaker itself, is part of that little enclosure. The Surround itself is glued to the little enclosure and can actually be considered the basket for the speaker...this is where all the confusion came from...So you actually took the old POS Nokia speaker out of the enclosure and put the Eclipse in its place? Sounds like a good idea...you get better all around sound with a 5 1/4

thanks

the factory enclosure is for 4 yes. You cna remove it and enlarge the hole in the metal to accomodate any size speaker you wish if you have the know-how and tools.
