I have just brought a e34 530i and it has a oil leak which looks like its coming from the head gasket, is this comon on the 530i? Also i was wondering if it has asc and if so how can i turn it on/off, i cant find a asc button. Is the e34 530i any good?

p.s im new to this forum and BMWs.

Hi Ashley:

Pleased that you got a Bimmer. As a new comer perhaps you wish to intro yourself at the Welcome Thread so members will be more receptive to communicate.

From the root of your question, I'd recommend you see a good, honest BMW independent mechanic pronto and have that car thoroughly checked. If you purchased from a dealer, even though it may have been represented as is you have a 3-month warranty for hidden vices. Oil coming out, specially from a seal in the engine is one of the big no-nos.

Have the car fixed, then learn about the asc. No Owner's Manual?

BMWs are cars built for the long haul, providing that they be treated as recommended for operation, maintenance and repairs.

Dunno if you've had this fixed or not as it's been a while. But I would suggest that it would be the tappet/rocker/cam cover gaskets rather than the headgasket...

Not an expensive or hard job to do these gaskets. This would be the first step, then wash it all down and re-inspect after driving for a bit.

Hi, yeah it was the rocker covers ive fixed one but hopefully ill be changing the engine soon. Nice to see another west aussie with a e34

By the way, if you get stuck with your engine change... I have now done one and can give you some hints and tips if required...

I also have a full long motor albiet No.1 Piston Bore is naffed and I also still have Brand New Headgaskets with Brand New Head Bolts and a full VRS kit minus rocker cover gaskets and exhaust manifold gaskets. Cost me my arm and leg but they are no good to me now. Still all in their packaging to.

I picked up my Donk from East... Alot cheaper than that with warranty and low kays. It's a Jap Import motor out of a front cut.

Checked it over, replaced gaskets and seals etc and she's sweet.

I have the contact details if you want them. I arranged Freight myself and it was cheap as through E-GO.com.au from the seller in NSW to my door in Perth.

It's not a job that you would want to do yourself unless you have mechanical ability and some trade tools.. I'm a mechanic myself by trade and even I got frustrated with the engine swap among other things..

By the way, I did consider the 4.0ltr engine swap as there seemed to be more around, but no one could confirm for me that it was a simple swap... I wasn't keen to find out the hard way and waste a couple of grand!! Mind you, I only asked around locally in Perth..

Ive done a fair few engine swaps ( mostly deisels) and my old man seems to know a bit about cars. From what ive read i can swap in a 4L and use the same wiring harness but change the ecu. Im looking for a 6 speed box as well.

Have you had your car at the motorplex before?

I hit the Plex as often as I can, but alas the Beemer has only been running for a few days now. So nope, she hasn't seen the strip nor will. Infact, i'll be down there this weekend for the start of the season, should be a good meet!

I have a few mates with dedicated drag cars and help out when I can.

Sounds like your up for a bit of work, swapping out the 3.0ltr with the 4.0ltr and the auto for the manual. Wouldn't there be issues with the box change due to the tranny being electronic? I rekon it would have it's own ECU somewhere?

Yeah i havent been to a proper drag meeting for a while now, went to the test'n'tune a few weeks back tho. Fairly long drive from bunbury but when dad gets his car going again ill be there every meeting

I've searched for info on the auto to manual swap and everyone has said just to remove the tranny computer and make the car think its in park so it will start, doesnt sound to hard.

That service manual is probly the most useful thing on the net for these cars. I tryed to join that bimmer club website but i havent got a email back yet, cheers for that though. Have you been on Bimmerforums.com - The Ultimate BMW Forum their e34 section seems more active than this forum.

Yeah Ash, I'm on that bimmerforum..... Same username.

I also haven't received a response from that Perth Forum either..

You will need to get a few other bits and pieces, such as the pedal box, slave cylinder, clutch master cylinder, lines, wire in the reverse lights, bridge the inhibitor switch, clutch, flywheel, throw out bearing, spiggot bearing and maybe the transmission mounts and crossmember etc.. Pretty decent job I rekon!!

The engine im lookng at still has the gearbox connected and comes with everything needed for the swap including the tailshaft Its $3000 and shipping is $800, i know its a lot but i cant find another 6 speed with the parts included.

Try and arrange your own shipping if you can through E-GO.com.au as it will be alot cheaper than $800.

I was quoted $800 for my engine from NSW and had it shipped for less than $200 door to door through E-GO.

Matthew was the one who sourced my engine for me and ASV were the suppliers.

They may be off assistance for something locally and maybe cheaper?
