I have a 1994 520i, and i just had a problem with my gearbox. As i was driving, i was about to change from 3rd to 4th gear, but as i tried to put it into 4th, all the gears "disappeared". The gearlever could be moved around without any gears, even with the clutch connected. I didn't hear any sounds or scraping or anything like that. Is my gearbox history, or could it be something else?

your shift linkage may have broke that would be my best guess.
