I am new to the forum and new to BMWs for that matter. I was wondering which car, an E30 M3 or an E36 M3, would make a better autoX car. I race almost every weekend during the spring and summer, but I want to upgrade my car and would really like an M. Before I go out and spend the money on one though, I would like to hear your opinions on which one is the better autoX car and why you think that. Any input would be helpful.

Why wouldn't you autoX an E30? Just becuase they are so rare? Where we autoX there is VERY little risk that you would wreck you car and mess it up, the worst thing that you are going to do is hit some grass...

I've heard from people that the E30 would make a better autoX car because of its light weight and hp numbers.... 190 hp 2800 lbs. Sounds a lot like the numbers for the second gen RX-7 which I know are great autoX cars because i've driven one before.

Forget about the replacement and everything, which one would perform better while still being a great daily driver?

Thanks for the input so far guys... keep it coming...

As rhit stated, I dont see anything wrong with auto-xing an E30. Nothing to hit (except maybe a cone or two). And if there are any concerns about the motor/suspension/mechanicals of the car, you probably shouldnt have bought it anyway unless you plan on "restoring". Go for the E30 if you can find one :yup

well first if you are in one of those little clubs all you can hit is a cone, but if you are doing it on real roads theres a number of things you can hit, not saying dont use an e30 (they are the best for it!) but be careful and be ready to have an e30 m3 one day and not the next! haha

yeah it is going to be different! think of it this way! When you are going through the corner in FWD car and you give it gas its just going to pull the car through without really doing anything, but in RWD when corning if you give it to much gas the back tires are spinning which can make you spin out really ez, however dont let that scare you its easy to control and RWD is so much better for autoX yoiu will never go back to FWD again! Also be careful about driving the RWD in rain, to much gas in a corner and you can be looking behind you in a flash!

have fun and good luck! :rock

basically, the e30 was more well developed when considering all around figure and stats. The e36 is more powerful, the EURO e36 will defintely pwn. I would go with an e36. They are very upgradable and you wont need to find a treasure chest to afford its upgrades.

Go for an euro spec e36 M3.... Until sept. 1995 they have an output of 286 HP, after that month they have installed a 3.2 litre engine with 321 HP.... I'll be sure you beat them all :nana

I doubt its faster than e46 m3

and the swap would most likely require a complete overhaul in the electronics dept.

Here an e36 M3 with 321 HP costs (only the engine) 3000 euro ($3750??). Don't now what a swap requires!
