well i'm never forgetting to bring the camera on business trips again. :banghead

we went to the big island for work yesterday. finished what we had to do by 9:30 am, so we had the whole day to kill before our afternoon flight back.

so for kicks we drove to kalapana, where the lava flow from ca. 1977 wiped out the whole town. it was really creepy, there you are driving on a beautiful road, then suddenly there is a huge wall of lava, right in front of you like a brick wall, in the middle of the damn road. the area is completely deserted. there were 4WD tracks going up the lava flow, so we drove on it. the height of the flow must have been 15-20 high (or deep, depending on how you look at it)! some places were probably deeper. the flow itself goes on for miles, but so far only a couple of miles of it have driveable tracks. while on the flow you can look at the side of the mountain and see the entire slope covered in a black carpet of lava, all the way up to kilauea. really eerie. like i said, i wish i had my camera.

anyway, here are a few pics from the exact same trip last year. i always book the morning trip so we can catch the sunrise on the plane. :) this is what sunrise looks like at 18,000 feet.

we were in a pontiac montana minivan.

it was very nice for a minivan. i had my own a/c controls in the back and 3-way split folding middle seats. two peeps up front, and i PWNED the entire two back rows of seats! muahahahaha!
