The rectangle light on the left of my check control panel is an overheat lamp (i have seen a few different versions with seat belt lights, air bag lights etc). I pulled the cover of the check control out to fix a defective led for the washer fluid and realised there are no bulbs behind the overheat light. So i pulled the backlight bulb out and put it in the overheat socket and pressed the check button and it did not turn on. Does the overheat lamp light up when you press the check button or is that only for the led's? and if not how do i test the overheat lamp?

Overhead lamp.
To tim96, you can set the overhead lamp to be always off, always on, or on only when the door opens. Just experiment with the small black button at the bottom of the overhead lamp.

The overheat light in the overhead check contol panel stays on all the time see the bulb in the bottom socket on the left of the circuit board. The other 3 sockets do not make the bulb light up are these sockets to add additional lights or are these 3 sockets the overheat lamp (which turn on when it overheats) and the bottom bulb is just to light up the text "overheat". Or is something faulty and the overheat light should not be on?

Your picture cleared up a few things
If you have a reliable temp gauge in your instrument cluster, that should be good enough. If you have access to an infrared thermometer, you can point it at the top radiator hose to get a more exact temperature reading after the car has reached operating temperature. If those are in reasonable agreement, I wouldn't worry about needing an overheat indicator.
My son's 90 325i convertible does not have the overheat text label in the active check panel (just seat belt and SRS). When his water pump failed and the car started to overheat, I got the check engine light and quite a few of the other warning lights in the instrument cluster to light up as the temp gauge started to tip into the red.
What year and model is your BMW by the way?

that's not an overheat lamp, it's a low coolant idicator means nothing...forget about and put some antifreeze in the tank...what are you thinking?

do you know how cars work? you have a coolant temp gauge on the dash board...that's all that counts...if that baby is in the red you have a problem. that bullshit up on the roof...means nothing.....forget about the roof mounted warning....total bullshit

its a 1990 320i e30. Temp gauge is fine stays right in the middle. silversled i thinik it is an overheat lamp i heard it is for the catalic converter??? why would they have two low coolant warnings in the check conrol and the coolant tank is full,

the overhead telltale means you are low on coolant and should check the coolant level. Don't confuse that with the actual temputure gauge (needle) on the dash board. The little light on top means nothing, the needle in the dash display means everything...get it?

silversled have another look at the photo. The light to the left of the check button (check button is on the bottom right) is the coolant level indicator which works fine. The rectangle overheat light is at the bottom of the blank square on the left of the check panel which is what i am talking about.
I think it is a faulty sensor as the light is always on and i am pretty sure a cat cant overheat 2 seconds after a cold start or on a cold morning when the ignition is in the on position but the engine hasnt been started yet but where do you find and how do you remove the sensor?

of part of the exhaust. Is the thing sticking in the side of it the catylic converter temp sensor... I am not sure where the other end goes as the cable goes up through the floor Do i just stick a spaner on the nut to take it out and clean or replace it?
