I recently purchased a 525i for short money. I'm fully aware that I rolled the dice and may be taking on a rather large task both financially and physically. It's an auction vehicle and I was told the only issue known is the Catalytic converter. Called around today to shop a price and I was met with a question I couldn't really answer.

1) What part of the converter is it? My answer was I thought there was only one converter. Pipe from the engine to the converter and then a pipe from the converter to the muffler (something along those lines at least). Then I had to rethink it... It's a BMW, nothing on this car is just that simple.

So my questions now are how many converters does a 2005 525i have?
Does it split off somewhere after the intake?
Dual Converters possibly?

Again, it's an auction car so helpful information from the dealer on the car on a scale from 1-10 was .0001... What I can tell you is there are no leaks and strangely the car is very quiet for a converter issue. However, after accelerating after a couple feet and reversing and then staying idle for about 3-5 mins it starts to smoke. Not a lot of smoke but a relatively noticeable amount. My guess is there is a clog and all the gasses are shooting to the front. I'm not a mechanic but I've owned several cars, enough to understand. Car is currently in tow condition due to the possible converter. It does start right up and can move but driving it for a long distance is highly unlikely in it's current state. The engine is in immaculate shape and it runs smooth and shifting from Park to Reverse to Drive is seamless. In fact everything under the hood is in excellent shape so I'm hoping that's a a good sign and maybe the dealer was telling the truth about the issue (hard to believe but just maybe!) An exhaust specialist today asked me if it's a regular 6 or a V6... The question had me puzzled to say the least. He said if it's a V6 it could be a nightmare. So not only did I learn that there are possibly more than one converters for this thing I also learned that a V6 has variations.

A repair shop told me they need to know which part of the converter it is because that could change the price dramatically...

Just looking for helpful information from a person that has been down this road or just knows my struggle.

So im thinking at first is maybe your car has a turbo???? Bad turbos leak oil and cause smoke...could be blown head gasket. But i see your dilemma of thee CAT. Ive never had a cat issue, mechanic told me once that from temperature test before and after and on thee CAT they were clogged, well i was broke, so i gutted the cats. Same result, no change. I was having acceleration issues, come to find out it was just the fuel pump.

So maybe try having someone feel exaust pressure from tail pipe. Feel the pressure off of a good car to compare...Definitely put new and fresh gas in car, could be something bad in tank...
