Hi all,

I am all new to the forum and being a big fan of BMWs i just love it.

I own a 2dr 94 318IS E36 and I have decided to finally upgrade my engine to an M, not that the M42 engine is bad, but i cant bear to see the M´s revving next to me at traffic lights and I cant do nothing cos they just pull away.

My car is a LHD i have imported from Europe, I live in Mozambique by the way, but the South Africa model had an E36 M3 with 3.0 version and a 3.2 with 6Spd on the 4dr version. I can get both of them at resonable price including Gearbox at around $2000 for either one of them.

I have a friend that has given me a 6spd gearbox, now my question can I get the 3.0 engine only which will be cheaper and fit it with the 6Spd gearbox? Will it work? I know that Gear Ratio has something to do with it, but not sure.

In the last case i will go for the 3.2 complete set.

Hope anyone can help me, thank you

Moved thread to E36 tech section.

The 6-sp will work fine with the 3.0 if you decide to go taht route.

If the cost will be about the same, then I suggest to go with the 3.2. It gives you a nice deal more torque, and is rated at 321 hp instead of 280 hp for the 3.0.

Hi all, sorry for the late reply, it has been a long weekend and I was out riding bikes.
Thanks for all the adive, I will definetly go fr the 3.2 than.

I´m not sure what else I will need besides the Gearbo and engine. I know for sure that the Radiator, air filter/Air flow meter, computer box, CDI, LSD I will nedd to change, but what else? Propshaft? Fuel pump?I´ve seen somewhere that I also need to chage the subframe, what is this?

Thx

Do you have a new differential & rear axles? They are different from a 318 and even from a 325. You're talking M3 power here! You will twist that car into a pretzel if you don't do EVERYTHING that makes an M3 an M3. Bigger cooling syatem, different suspension & spring rates and MUCH larger brakes to take all the extra wiight. You will spend $ 20,000 USD or more trying to make that 318 into an M3. I have to laugh at guys like you. This is like trying to take a FIAT and make it into A Ferrari. Yep, the 318 & M3 LOOK the same BUT everything underneith is different. You would be better off making a tube chassis car, skin it in fiberglass body pannels & putting the M3 engine into that if you want a fast car. ALL the running gear is not from a 318IS. The car body is even reinforced to take the M3 power. Nice project if you have the time, but I would just BUY an M3 if you have to have one.

M E, please dont laugh, for your information my questions and doubts on this project is only to make sure I get the right parts and not cash related. dont talk about costs with me, I live on the other side of the planet my friend, if you see my initial post the gearbox + engine will cost me $2000, a complete 2door 96 German Spec M3 with engine problem (and of course, some parts missing) is costing me $1200, and the guy even gave me over 2 months to pay. Besides all of this, I am partner in lots of business´s, including a workshop where all my cars are tunned and serviced, so costs are not that high. All I want to know is what I ´ll have to remove from the donor and I want to make sure it still there, if not I need to look elsewhere, either way Im going with this,

thx

OK then.

Take EVERYTHING, ALL the running gear, alll the breaks all the drive trane, EVERYTHING including the master cylinder & clutch master cylinder. All that should be left of the doner M3 is an EMPTY shell. Don't forget to subframes and you will need to reinforce ALL the rear suspension pick up points or you WILL rip them out of the 318. Google racing mods & do ALL OF THEM to reinforce the chassis. Be sure to rebuild everything you can when you put it back together. Use ALL new brake lines. Do a little research on the M3 builds by the factory. You'll find out that body shells are pulled off the assembly lines & sent to M motorsports to do ALL the M3 mods needed to keep the car from coming apart at the seams from all the extra power. Also go thru & add additional spot welds in the frame everywhere you can for strength. I really hate to see you NOT do all this & have a cracked frame after all this work.

Thanks man, it sounds like a lot of job. thanks for the info, I will definetly go for it as cost is low. I could go and rebuild the M3 but the car besides being a RHD it has benn parked for a while and it will need a complete new paint work while mine 318 is spotless and LHD. Thanks man I will keep you all post it on the progress of the project, Cheers...
