DETROIT -- BMW slowly removed the billowing gray cover from a new new silver 2004 645 Ci convertible here this morning.

The $77,000 soft top should be available in U.S. by the end of March or early April.

“The 645 Ci hard-top coup has a $70, 000 price tag,” said BMW spokesman Tom Purzez.

Purzez said the company the does not announce sales projections, but that the new 6-series likely will be sold out soon in the U.S.

“A 645 Ci coup was featured in the Neiman Marcus Christmas catalogue and immediately generated 50 sales,” he said.

BMW, which had record sales of 276,000 cars and trucks in U.S. last year, will begin selling its new X3 sports utility vehicle next month. And, a MINI convertible will debut here this summer.

BMW also said it delivered some 150 new Rolls Royce Phantoms in the U.S. in 2003.
