the 318is is a 1.8l 4cyl
the 325is is a 2.5l 6cyl i think the displacement may be bigger

the 325 and the 318 are pretty much the same except for the motor size

the 325 will be better for tuning.

pros of the 318:

lower insurance
better gas milage
cheaper to maintain

cons of the 318:
not slow, but not fast either
not as many options as 325

pros of 325:
more power
more options (interior luxuries)

cons of 325:
costlier to maintain (VANOS issues, more cylinders to worry about
higher insurance
lower gas milage

So would a 318is or 325is be a good choice for a first car? Do they have many problems or are they pretty dependable?...Is maintenance costly?..

for a first car I suggest the 318. it is powerful enough to move you around but not powerful enough for you to get yourself hurt or killed on accident as easy as in a 325. It will be cheaper overall to run, and the only distinguishing marks between them is a single VS dual exhuast. Common problems with the e36 include waterpump failure if not upgraded to metal impeller; window control arm can breakl; and the starter can act funny in high heat.

But lets say i want to op for tuning ability?...Is the 318is equal in options for tuning and performance once its tuned? Also, what CAN you do to a 318is or 325 as far as tuning goes...(was looking at turbo kits...10k+ :uggh ) is there anything else that can be done to a 318is or 325is to put out some crazy hp...?

a 318 would prob get to 60 in just under 9 seconds, a 325 would get there at around 7.5 if ur good, check out out this site s/c
anyway, if u like how they look, u could get an e30 325i/s which is prob about at quick as an e36 325....theyre both expensive to do forced induction with, active autoworks does turbos and s/c for bmws, but theyre $$$$$$$$, if ur into doing ur own work it shouldnt be TOOO hard to fabricate ur own turbo setup, w/the help of a good mechanic to do welding, and shit. other than forced induction, u could go NA, get a bigger bore throttle body, which would be real nice, a conforti chip w/ an intake w/a heatshield, new flywheel would really make it more liveley and easier to rev, cams would be good too, as would getting ur heads bored out, you could get a multi throttle intake sytem which gives serious gains(i think all m cars have this as standar, i know the e30 m3 does) look at it here, headers and a full exhast system would be nice, pullies i hear are good, but i dont know about them, if u wanna learn about turbos and whatnot read the book "maximum boost"

The insursnce will be higher for an is than an i also. If you are concerned about insurance a lot, 4 doors might be the way to go. I pay around 180/month for full coverage, and thats with hella discounts. It varies due to location, but its safe to assume that for a 325 and new driver you could be paying anywhere from 200-300/month depending on coverage.

As far as speed goes, a manual is a must for the 318. the autos are very slow compared to the manual. A good driver in a manual 318 VS someone in an auto 325 would still probably lose to the 325, but it would be close.

For tuning you can do the same things to both as far as I know. I dont know of any products that are 325 only without a 318 counterpart.

I'm 16 but the car is going to be insured under my parents name...What about getting engines replaced?...Is that extremely expensive? reason i'm asking is because i've seen some nice looking e36's with high miles for reasonable price...

BMW engines last a very long time without problems. An engine swap can run anywhere from 4-10k installed.

Also, even if the car is in your parents name it will still be high.
