I have a 1996 318 ti which im going to change the headgasket on. My questions are mostly with part replacement. I want to get good parts at the right price and dont know where would be a good place to look.... Im going to be a waterpump headbolts/headgasket possibly chan ten.?? also i dont know what the part is called but its the flange in the front of the engine with the coolant hoses on it....? mine looks like its leaking and would like a new one possibly one that isnt plastic... Any online sites for parts would be best due to the lower cost on parts.. also i think i have what is called the m44 but im not sure anyway i can find that out would help too... thanks all in advance!

not sure if you have to remove the timing chain to replace the head gasket (im pretty sure you do, atleat part way?..correct me if im wrong) you might want to look into purchasing some new parts for the chain assembly. They are known to make noise with higher mileage and can wear and eventually cause engine failure. So look into that.

Yes.....the M44 is correct & that would be the Radiator!

Either the water pump or the thermostat housing?

hmm the t-stat might be behind it... i will have to take a better look at it... i think i have heard it called a coolant flange..? i know how to fix cars just not very much experience with bmw or this wouldnt be a problem =< thx

You are welcome.......yeah looks like just plastic, but the thermostat comes with the housing.....Autohausaz seems to have the best price.....

No.....never was a BMW Tech. but worked as a Tech. for Nissan, Toyota, Acura, & a Used car Dealer, during that, I restored a 72' Chevelle SS from the ground up.......Now, I inspect & repair.....Mass Transit Trains.......

As for BMW, let's just say I love this car so much, I do my homework & apply the basics......been doing this for the last 3 years........
