Help! Tried to start my 2001 325ci this morning and heard loud clicking and had flashing headlights, but it won't turn over. Batter indicating still good. All other electrics work. Out of warranty and want to repair myself. Any suggestions? TIA

Sounds like a dead battery. The battery has enough reserve power to operate the headlights and the starter solenoid; the solenoid is the clicking sound you hear when trying to start the car. However, it doesn't have enough power to actually turn the starter. A dead battery is caused by either: 1) battery malfunction, 2) battery useful life ended, 3) alternator cannot properly recharge the battery. Based on the age of your car (2001), I suspect #2. Have the battery and alternator tested. Replace as necessary.

Agree with TUDM, :cheers
Just want to add, that usually after excersising starter-solenoid-starter relay at this point causes oxidization of contacts on starter relay. After battery replaced expect to get condition when you turn ignition key you will hear one click, alss lights dim but engine doesn't turn. When this happens replace starter assy. Again no guarantee in life...

The culprits are contacts sets in starter relay, in solenoid. If they would be sold separately they would of cost about $15. I routinely replace them on honda's and toyota's: takes about 20 min with a smoke breake. But everybody wants to sell you starter assembly for $150-$250 while requesting you return core...

Nope, if you hear click, click, click...and your headlights flash.

Time to get a new battery.

Or, charge it up. Either way...it's your battery.

Problem solved.
