Hi everybody,

I have an E 36 M3 eurospec with originally 321hp, I had the car on Dyno and it gives 235 HP on the wheels. So there is a lot of hp that is lost somewhere. The car has done 121.000 km with the VANOS changed on 40.000 km the engine is running fine with no noise from the VANOS unit, further the guy who did the dyno claimed the fuelling was OK. By the way - the car is completely stock - no mods at all.

Question 1, any ideas where my original horses are?
Question 2, any ideas where I can find a blower for this car?

All answers highly appreciated.

The drive train loss can vary for a number of reasons, the obvious ones are bearings and universal joints. Could also just be the nature of the drive train in your car. My engine (not BMW) was rated at 165kw, but only delivered 123kw to the wheels through a 4 speed auto, so the losses could be higher than the 15% you have in mind. You might be chasing phantom HP. There are plenty of more experienced members that will be able to give you a better response to mine. Good luck and welcome to the werkz.

Hey Racemaster in which country do you stay? is your car imported or built localy? reason i ask.. the euro spec in europe has a compression ratio of 11.3:1 and some countries like South-Africa had the exact same engine but a compression ratio of (10.8:1) becoz of our crap fuel!! 235whp is 173kw at the wheels and is strong for stock!!! are you on sea level? im making 250whp after a good couple of mods incl headwork and i upped my compression back to the europe spec 11.3:1 must add we are 5 085 feet above see level! there is so much more you can do before you even have to think charger, turbo or nos! so much more fun to give turbo cars sticks with an N/A car!!!

Hi Streetracer,
The car is built in 1996 in Germany, running on 98 octane unleaded at sea level.
I'm wondering if the VANOS is stealing some horses, the guy doing the dyno indicated that changing to K&N airfilter could increase the HP....

get a clued up bmw machanic to advance and lock your vanos!! ive got a BMC replacemet filter and it does wonders!! picked up 5kw on the wheels with just the filter! did a before and after run.. if you can get your hands on a cold air induction which has a sealed pipe all the way to your bumper is the way to go! ill post some vids of my brothers 325i with cold air induction!!

the last part of your exhaust from the cats back.. get the pipes replaced with 63mm pipes and my back box is a aftermarket lumina box and i picked up another 8kw! get rid of the cats aswell if your laws alow it!

i changed my diff to a 3.91 today and now its raining :cya
had it on the freeway and 120khm is running on 3000rpm which is fine by me!! ill go try it out later tonight if the rain clears up!!!

Hi Streetracer,

thanks for your valuable imput, I checked the BMC site and they have the replacement filter you have in your car and they also have a carbon intake filter that looks very nice ( at a price though).

hey.. the BMC CDA is good but a little small!! RGM make one in S.A with a 100mm BMC cone filter inside the carbon sleave!! go have a look on theyre site Home it retails for R1995 S.A rand which is about $180 american.. and def. worth it!!

ok i see with the diff my speedo is out about 10kmh which is not to bad true 120kmh is on 3500rpm! but the acceleration is amazing!! ill go test it at the illegal drags tonight.. will keep you posted!!
