hi this is my first post..and i havent done this kind of thing before ..feel like a 70yr old virgin!!!!
and guess what..i have a problem...i cant get it to start

problem: bmw 318i P reg (1996) auto ...key stuck in position 2
car wont Turn on!!! alarm goes off when i plug in battery

short:
key position is stuck in position 2 , key can go in and out but WILL NOT turn to positon off or ignition..so car wont start
i am guessing its in position 2 because the lights/fan (which is wired in directly to battery) come on.


last night came home whipped key out too fast, i think it was still in posittion 2,engine was still running,een though key was ou..so...i put key in car, it wouldnt turn,engine wouldnt turn off,had to take out the fuse to the fuel pump + pull out wires to battery to stop car...
in the morning put back fuse and battery +(therefore fan on)... alarm went off.got in car-alarm stopped after 4 sec but key still won turn when put in ...


how do i get out of positon 2, how do i get the car to start,is key damaged or can i do something, is it immobilised?

thankyou for your help in advance..and please be gentle with me..baby steps plz .. i am 70!!! or maybe i will show my son your answer although i dont think he will have a clue either..

sounds promising darkhorse..thanks.... i will check it out if i can do it....if that doesn work maybe the lock cylinder...
anyone else want add there two pennies worth is welcome

thanks darkhorse ...the tips in the link worked..saved me lots of time and hassle and money too...
although i probably need a new cylinder because the key does spin sometimes so i am guessing the system is worn out...
