Hello all, this is my first post. I searched this and other forums on the net but can't seem to find the correct way to reset the oil change interval on my '06 525i (E60 I believe). I'm fully capable of performing my own oil changes as I worked as a mechanic for several GM dealers back in the 80's. However, these days with all the computers and ECM's, there are an abundance of tools and procedures needed just to perform simple maintenance such as oil changes.

To the point, I've tried pressing the odometer button on my car while inserting the key to the on position and all I get on the display is a series of responses such as 01: ?????, then 02: ?????, etc. I never get a "reset".

Question 1: Can I use a standard ODB II scanner/reset tool to reset the oil change interval, brake fluid interval, etc. or do I need a special tool?

Question 2: If I need a special tool, could someone please recommend one that works and is not so expensive? I'm leary of the Ebay route unless I know exactly what I'm buying and that it will do the trick.

Question 3: Since this is my first BMW, does anyone have any tricks or suggestions they would like to pass on? I love my car and I want to keep it in fine working operating condition for a long time.

Thanks,
John

Solved!!

Well, I feel so silly. I finally figured this out. The instuctions for resetting the service indicators say to turn on the key but don't start the car. My car has the push-in key and start button. I was pushing the key into the slot but I wasn't pushing the start button to turn the car on (not starting). Once I did this, I was able to access the reset options.

If anyone has suggestions for me since this my first Bimmer and somewhat a novice, I would appreciate it.
