Main beam headlights not working

Hi,

Purchased an e39 540i (2002) recently and have an issue with the main beam headlights not coming on at all - the dipped headlights and other lights seem to be fine, but main beams won't switch on at all.

The bulbs appear to be fine and there are no warning lights on the dash.

I've read some other posts about issues with lights seeming to point towards the LCM, but also some mentioning fuses. Are there fuses for the headlights in this car? Manual doesn't seem to list any fuses for lights or is it all controlled by the LCM?

Anyone got any experience with fixing an issue like this?

Cheers,

D

Bulb sending unit?

well that brings back the same nightmare I had with my E34 (1989 535i) 20 years ago, pre-internet assistance.
high beams and fog lamps were the only that worked, no main headlights.
Turned out to be what I recall was called a 'bulb sending unit' or something like that.
I just tried to google it and nothing came up, which is very strange.
It resembles a VHS tape and clicked in somewhere under the hood, very easy installation.
The price is what was scary, it was like $300. Appalling price.
I called junk yards and finally got one for like $50. Good luck!
