1987 E28 Sunroof Problems

I've had my '87 E28 for 10 years now and I've never had an issue with the sunroof, until now. All of a sudden two weeks ago, it wouldn't close. When I press the close button I can hear the motor running loudly, but nothing happens with the roof. It won't move. I had someone help me close it by hand while I pushed the Close button, but it won't even close all the way. I stops about an inch early. It won't seal shut. It's been partially open for a couple weeks now. When I press the open button, it will open a little bit, but it stops. Then I can close it back up, but stops again in the same place. Is it the motor? I can hear the motor running, so maybe it 's not the motor, but something else?? I looked at the motor when I press the close and open button, and I can see that gear turning, but the roof isn't moving. I went to a salvage yard today looking for a new motor, but could only find a 1990 535i, but not an '87. The 1990 one seemed a little different, but couldn't be sure. Are they the same? I left it because I didn't have the 3 star special Phillips head type screwdriver to loosen the bolts. My regular Phillips didn't work. Guess I need to buy one of those, whatever they are? Need a little help here. Is it the motor? Is it something else that's not catching further back on the roof itself? Not easy to get to. I can access the motor, but if it's something further back like a cable or something, I only seem to be able to access it from the top, and it won't open all the way without doing it manually. It's a real quandry here. A little help??
Thanks.

Not a single reply here. I posted this a month ago. I finally used an Allen wrench to close the roof all the way, to protect from rain.

It's probably not the motor. Some plastic piece most likely broke off and is stuck in the rail. Those plastic pieces become brittle over time and will break when you least expect it. Take the panel off and you'll see the problem.

Thanks. Sounds tough to remove the panel? Wouldn't know where to begin. I have all the tools, but an Instruction Guide of some kind would be helpful.
