Oil and oil filter to use in a 2000 Z3?

Sorry if this is a repost or in the FAQ, but I couldn't find anything after looking around....

We have a 2000 Z3 and while I think regular Penzoil 10-40w and a Fram filter would be fine, my wife is insisting on getting "BMW High Performance Synthetic Oil".

It seems ridiculous to me that synthetic oil would be necessary and I don't believe the hype for a second.

Who's right?
