Looking for a Z

I've recently retired, and I'm in the market for a used car. I've had many German vehicles over the years, Mercedes and VW autos and BMW motorcycles, but I've never had a BMW automobile. I've always liked the BMW roadsters, and now I'm trying to decide what to shop for. I especially appreciate the classic good looks of the Z3, but I've been told that the Z4 is a much more sophisticated design. I've driven a 2001 Z3 3.0, and that car just really fit me well. I've also driven a Z4, but that chassis with a 2.5l seems to be marginally underpowered. This car will be used like one of my motorcycles, not driven for transportation, but just for fun. I'm interested in what folks more familiar with these models might suggest - Z3 or Z4, what year, what engine, what to avoid, and any other comments you might have.

I have driven a z3 1.9 L for the last 8 yrs. Really no problems to speak of. (100,000 miles) The next one I get would maybe be a z3 with a bigger engine(2L or 3L) although this gets 30 mpg.
